Email verification for ecommerce stores

Online stores collect addresses at checkout, in pop-ups and at account creation, mostly typed on a phone. Verify in two places: on your own signup forms, to catch typos and throwaway addresses before a welcome code is issued, and in bulk on the customer export before big campaigns. Keep risky consumer addresses; suppress invalid ones from marketing.

A store's list is unusual because most of it belongs to people who actually paid you. That changes the rules: a risky result on a customer is not a reason to delete them, and an invalid address is often a typo you could have fixed while the customer was still on the page.

Where store lists pick up bad addresses

A typo at checkout loses the receipt and the shipping updates

The customer still pays, but never sees the order confirmation. A misspelled Gmail username is caught because Gmail answers per mailbox: of 44,298 gmail.com addresses in our Email List Health Report 2026, 94.0% were confirmed and 6.0% were rejected as not existing. A misspelled domain with no mail server comes back invalid too. See email typo correction.

Throwaway addresses farm first-order discounts

A welcome code tied to a new email invites a fresh throwaway address for every order. 8,740 known disposable domains come back invalid with the reason Disposable address. Plus-address variants are a separate trick, covered in plus addressing and trial abuse.

Some consumer providers never answer the question

In the same report, every one of the 557 yahoo.com addresses checked came back as accepting any recipient, so a Yahoo customer's mailbox cannot be confirmed over SMTP. That is a risky result, not a bad customer. Verifying Yahoo addresses explains why.

Apple relay addresses look odd but are real

Customers who use Sign in with Apple can share a privaterelay.appleid.com address that forwards to their real inbox. Apple's developer documentation says you register your sending domains to reach them. They are not throwaway addresses, so do not block them.

Two checkpoints for a store's list

  1. At the form, verify on submit

On signup, pop-up and account forms you control, call the verification API from your server. Ask the customer to retype an invalid address, withhold the welcome code from disposable ones, and accept risky ones.

  2. Before big campaigns, export customers and subscribers

Use the guides for Shopify, WooCommerce, Klaviyo or Omnisend. Seasonal peaks are when a stale list does the most damage.

  3. Suppress, don't delete

Keep the customer and the order history. Suppress invalid addresses in your email platform so campaigns skip them, and keep the record in case the customer updates their address on the next order.

  4. Watch your platform's line

Klaviyo's deliverability guidance treats a bounce rate above 2% as needing attention. A verified list keeps bounces well under that before the send rather than explaining them after.

Common questions

Should I remove customers whose Yahoo address comes back risky?
No. Yahoo accepts any recipient during the mailbox check (all 557 yahoo.com addresses in SimpleVerifier's Email List Health Report 2026 did), so the result can never be valid. If they bought from you, keep them and let real bounces decide.
Does verification stop discount code abuse?
It stops the throwaway-address version: disposable domains come back invalid, so you can refuse them a welcome code. It does not stop someone using several real addresses they own; that needs per-customer limits in your store.
Can I verify addresses at checkout?
Where your platform lets you run your own code or a webhook on signup or account creation, call the API there. Where it does not, verify the customer export in bulk before each campaign.
Are Apple 'Hide My Email' addresses disposable?
No. They forward to a real inbox chosen by the customer. Apple asks senders to register their sending domains so mail reaches them.
