Phone number validation for call centers
Clean a dialer list before it is loaded: normalise every number to E.164 so the dialer adds the right country code, remove numbers that cannot exist under their country's numbering plan, and separate mobiles from landlines where calling rules differ. Live carrier lookups add the real line type and carrier; no check confirms a number is in service.
Every impossible number in a dialer list is an agent waiting on a failed connection. Every wrongly formatted international number is a call to the wrong country. Both are fixable before the list is loaded.
What wastes dial time
Mixed national and international formats
A UK number with its trunk 0, a US number without +1 and a German number with 0049 all need different handling. E.164 removes the guesswork. Country rules are on the phone formats pages.
Numbers that cannot exist
Wrong lengths, prefixes that are not assigned in the numbering plan and numbers keyed into the wrong country come back invalid. They never connect.
Mobile and landline rules differ
US law on autodialed and prerecorded calls treats mobile numbers differently from residential landlines (47 U.S.C. § 227). In the US the number format alone doesn't say which is which, so separating them needs a live lookup. This is not legal advice.
Prefixes don't tell you the carrier
The FCC lets customers keep their number when they change provider, so the original carrier of a number range is not necessarily its carrier today. A live lookup returns the current carrier.
Preparing a dialer list
Export the list with all its columns
Keep the lead ID, source and any consent fields.
Validate and normalise
Upload the CSV with the default country for numbers written without a +. Each number gets valid or invalid, E.164, country and plan-based type.
De-duplicate on E.164
The same number written three ways becomes one value. Remove duplicates so agents don't call the same person twice.
Look up line type and carrier
On Email + Phone, live lookups return mobile, landline or VoIP and the current carrier, 5,000 a month.
Split campaigns by line type, then scrub and load
Run mobiles and landlines under the rules that apply to each, scrub against Do Not Call lists, and load E.164 numbers into the dialer.
Dialer list rules by result
| Result | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| invalid | Remove before loading | Cannot connect. |
| valid · landline | Landline campaign | Different calling rules from mobiles in the US. |
| valid · mobile | Mobile campaign, with the consent it requires | Confirmed by plan or carrier lookup. |
| valid · fixed line or mobile (US, CA) | Look up before dialing | The format can't tell you. |
| valid · toll-free | Usually remove | A business inbound line. |
Valid means the number fits its numbering plan, plus carrier data when looked up. It never means the line is in service.
Common questions
- Does phone validation tell me if a number is disconnected?
- No. It confirms the number fits its numbering plan and, with a live lookup, its carrier and line type. Whether the line is connected right now isn't something any of these checks can confirm.
- Does SimpleVerifier check the Do Not Call Registry?
- No. Scrub against the National Do Not Call Registry and your internal suppression lists separately.
- How many lookups do I get?
- Email + Phone at $49.99 a month includes 5,000 live carrier lookups. Format validation is included on every plan and isn't counted.
