Verifying a purchased email list

Verification removes the dead addresses from a purchased list, but it cannot make the list safe to mail. It cannot detect spam traps built to look like real mailboxes, and it does not create consent. Mailchimp's Acceptable Use Policy prohibits purchased lists outright. Our honest advice is not to buy one.

People buy lists because building one is slow. The problem is that every protection in email, from platform policies to spam traps to complaint thresholds, is designed to catch exactly this.

Why a bought list fails even after verification

Spam traps look like real mailboxes

M3AAWG says traps are designed to be indistinguishable from other addresses, and that hits on pristine traps, addresses no person ever used, may indicate purchased lists. A trap that accepts mail verifies as valid. No verifier can see them all.

The platforms forbid it

Mailchimp's Acceptable Use Policy prohibits sending to purchased, rented or third-party lists, and its Omnivore system screens new addresses. HubSpot's policy prohibits sending to addresses collected without consent, and Shopify's email help says never to buy or rent lists.

'Opt-in' lists were opted in to someone else

Spamhaus's marketing FAQ says permission is not transferable, and describes removing traps and complainers from a non-opted-in list, 'listwashing', as against its policy.

Complaints, not just bounces

Recipients who never heard of you mark mail as spam. Google asks bulk senders to keep the spam rate below 0.3%, and HubSpot can suspend at 0.1% spam reports in a month. Verification does nothing for complaints.

If you already have one

  1. Find out how and when it was collected

Ask the seller for the source and the date. If they can't say, assume the worst.

  2. Verify it to measure it

The share of invalid results tells you how old and how recycled the list is. A high invalid rate is a reason to stop there.

  3. Don't import it into your marketing platform

Doing so breaks Mailchimp's and HubSpot's policies and risks the account you send everything else from.

  4. Use it only where the law and your platform allow

Some B2B outreach to business addresses is lawful in some countries under conditions; the UK ICO's guidance on marketing lists is a good example of how strict those conditions are. Use valid addresses only, at low volume, with an opt-out, and keep it off your main domain.

  5. Build your own list instead

Choose the accounts, then use the email finder to get addresses each company's server confirms. Slower, but the list is yours. See cold email for sending it safely.

Common questions

Can I verify a purchased email list?
Yes, and it will remove addresses that would bounce. It will not detect spam traps that accept mail, and it does not create consent, so the list is still risky to mail.
Can I upload a purchased list to Mailchimp after verifying it?
No. Mailchimp's Acceptable Use Policy prohibits purchased, rented and third-party lists regardless of verification.
Does verification remove spam traps?
Not reliably. Traps are built to look like real mailboxes, and one that accepts mail comes back valid. That is why spam trap guidance focuses on how a list was collected.
What's the alternative to buying a list?
Pick the companies you want to reach and find addresses for named people with an email finder, then verify and send at low volume from a properly set-up domain.
