Email verification for marketing automation
Marketing automation emails a contact the moment they enter a flow, so a quarterly clean is too late for every bad address that arrived in between. Verify at the point of entry, through the API or a Zapier or Make step, store the status on the contact, and make it an entry condition for every flow.
Batch cleaning fixes the list you have. Automation needs the opposite: a gate that checks each contact before the first automated email fires.
Why automations need a gate
No human looks at who enters a flow
A welcome series, a lead magnet delivery and a trial nurture all fire automatically. A typo or a bot submission gets the whole sequence.
Small bounces add up across many flows
Each flow sends a little, so no single campaign looks bad, but platforms measure the account. HubSpot measures hard bounces per month; Brevo looks at recent sends and can suspend above 2%; Klaviyo's guidance treats above 2% as needing attention.
Imports trigger flows too
Importing a list into a segment that starts a welcome series emails everyone on it at once. Verify imports before they reach a triggering list.
Fake contacts skew lead scoring
Bot submissions earn form-fill points and enter scoring models. Invalid addresses are an easy signal to zero them out.
Putting verification at the front of every flow
Catch the contact at intake
Call the API from your form handler, or add a step in Zapier or Make between the form and your platform, as in verifying leads automatically with Zapier.
Write status and reason to a contact field
One field your platform can segment on. Add the date too.
Gate flows on the field
Make 'email status is not invalid' an entry condition for every flow. Risky contacts can enter flows that stop if they do not engage.
Clean the backlog once
Export existing contacts and verify them in bulk: ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, Brevo, Drip, HubSpot.
Flow entry rules by result
| Result | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| valid | Enter all flows | Confirmed mailbox. |
| risky | Enter, exit if no engagement | Give the contact a chance, but don't keep mailing silence. |
| invalid | Never enter | Each flow email would bounce. |
Common questions
- Can I verify emails automatically in Zapier or Make?
- Yes. Add an HTTP step that calls the verification API with the new contact's email and write the returned status to a field in your marketing platform.
- Is a one-off list clean enough for automation?
- No. It fixes the current list, but every contact added afterwards enters flows unchecked. Verify at entry as well.
- What should happen to risky contacts in a flow?
- Let them in, but exit them if they do not open or click after the first few emails, so you are not repeatedly mailing an unconfirmed address.
