Verifying affiliate and lead-gen leads
When affiliates or lead-generation partners send you leads, every dead or throwaway address is money paid for nothing. Verify each lead as it arrives, through the API at your posting endpoint or in bulk on the partner's file, and write the acceptance rule into partner terms: invalid and disposable leads are rejected and not paid.
Paid lead sources have an incentive problem: the partner is paid per lead and you are paying for reachable people. Verification turns 'reachable' into something both sides can measure.
Where paid leads go wrong
Incentivised submissions
Traffic driven by rewards or contests fills forms with throwaway and made-up addresses. Disposable domains come back invalid, and invented mailboxes on providers that answer per mailbox come back as Mailbox not found.
Recycled lists sold as fresh leads
A partner may resend the same contacts to several buyers, or upload an old list. Co-registration and partner lists are also among the sources Mailchimp's Acceptable Use Policy prohibits, which matters if you plan to mail them from Mailchimp.
Duplicates across partners
The same person can arrive from two affiliates in a week. De-duplicate on email before paying, and decide in your terms who gets credit.
Fake phone numbers on phone-first offers
Lead forms that require a phone number attract invented ones. A format check rejects numbers that cannot exist in their country, which is included in every plan; see the phone number validator.
Verification as a lead acceptance rule
Write the rule into the partner terms first
State which results are accepted and paid, for example valid and risky accepted, invalid and disposable rejected, so disputes have an answer.
Store status, reason and partner ID together
Every lead record should carry the verification result and the source, so you can report by partner.
Reconcile by source before payout
Count invalid and disposable rates per partner each cycle. A partner with an unusual rate is the one to audit.
A starting acceptance policy
| Result | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| valid | Accept and pay | Confirmed mailbox. |
| risky · Accepts all addresses | Accept and pay | Business catch-all; most are real people. |
| risky · Role-based address | Accept or reject per terms | A real inbox, but not a named consumer. |
| invalid · Disposable address | Reject, don't pay | Throwaway inbox; flag the partner. |
| invalid · Mailbox not found / No mail server | Reject, don't pay | Unreachable lead. |
This is a starting point, not a standard. Agree the rule with each partner before traffic starts.
Common questions
- Can I reject affiliate leads based on email verification?
- Yes, if your partner terms say so. Many advertisers accept valid and risky results and reject invalid and disposable ones. Agree the rule before traffic starts.
- Does verification detect leads that were sold to several buyers?
- No. It tells you whether the address can receive mail. Duplicate and resold leads need de-duplication and partner-level reporting.
- Can I verify leads in real time as partners post them?
- Yes. The API is included in every plan with no per-call fee; Pro is $29.99 a month.
