Omnisend contacts to email list: unsubscribed set aside, non-subscribed shoppers marked

In short: Reads an Omnisend contacts CSV: Email subscription status sorted into subscribed (kept), non-subscribed (kept as unknown) and unsubscribed (set aside, which in Omnisend also covers bounces and spam complaints); tags and total spent kept, repeats merged. Limit: Omnisend's help lists the export columns but not the values the Email subscription status column holds; Subscribed, Non-subscribed and Unsubscribed are read from its audience FAQ, so check the notes above the result.

In Omnisend, go to Audience > Exports, click New Export, choose all contacts, contacts by email subscription status, a segment or a tag, click Export and then Download in the Exports tab. Only Owner, Admin and Analyst roles can export. Upload the CSV here: unsubscribed contacts are set aside, non-subscribed shoppers are marked Unknown, and tags and total spent stay with each address. Check it live before you send.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the list before the next campaign?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files; catch-all domains are marked. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Send to the valid file, and keep the set-aside file as your suppression list.

How do I turn an Omnisend export into a clean email list?

  1. In Omnisend, go to Audience > Exports and click New Export (you need the Owner, Admin or Analyst role).
  2. Choose all contacts, contacts by email subscription status, contacts in a segment or contacts with a tag, and click Export. A segment or tag can also be exported from Audience > Segments or Audience > Tags.
  3. In the Exports tab, click Download when the file is ready (lists under 10,000 contacts usually take under a minute).
  4. Upload the CSV here, or paste it. If you open it in Excel first, Omnisend suggests converting it to .xlsx to keep the formatting.

Example

You enter
An Omnisend contacts export with 6 rows: Email subscription status Subscribed, Unsubscribed and Non-subscribed, tags, total spent and an info@ address.
You get
4 contacts in the list (Mia as Unknown for Non-subscribed, tags and total spent kept), and Leo and Raj set aside as unsubscribed. The subscribed-only option sets Mia aside too.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How is each Omnisend status read?

Subscribed contacts opted in to email campaigns and automation workflows; they're kept. Non-subscribed contacts placed an order, abandoned a cart or created an account without opting in, so they stay in the list marked Unknown; tick the subscribed-only option to set them aside.

Unsubscribed covers contacts who opted out, bounced or marked your email as spam, all in one status. They're set aside by default. If you untick that option, remember the bounced and complained contacts come back with the opt-outs, because the export can't tell them apart.

What about SMS and push columns?

Omnisend's export also has SMS subscription status, SMS consent and browser push columns. Only the email subscription status decides what is set aside here; the phone number is kept in its own column.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Ecommerce stores
Move an Omnisend list to another platform without re-subscribing anyone who left, bounced or complained.
Agencies
Clean a client's Omnisend export before a migration and keep a suppression file.
Marketers
Split opted-in subscribers from shoppers who never opted in before a promotional send.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Omnisend's help lists the export columns but not the values the Email subscription status column holds; Subscribed, Non-subscribed and Unsubscribed are read from its audience FAQ, so check the notes above the result.
  • Unsubscribed in Omnisend includes bounces and spam complaints, so the set-aside file can't say which was which.
  • It can't tell which addresses have a working inbox today; that needs a live mailbox check.

Common questions

Which Omnisend columns does it read?
Email, First name, Last name, Email subscription status, Phone number, Total spent and Tags, from the fields Omnisend's help lists for the export. Segments, opt-in and opt-out dates and the SMS columns are recognised but not copied. The notes above the result say which were found.
Does exporting change anything in Omnisend?
No. Omnisend's help says exporting is view-only and doesn't change subscription statuses, tags or segments.
Is my contact list uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
