Shopify customers to email list: export subscribers who accept email marketing

In short: Reads the Shopify customers export (or an orders export, one row per line item) and gives one row per customer: name, country, Accepts Email Marketing, total spent, orders and tags. Subscribers and non-subscribers download as separate files. Limit: It reads the consent Shopify recorded; it can't tell whether that consent is valid where your customer lives.

To get an email list from Shopify, go to Customers in Shopify admin, choose Export, pick All customers and CSV, then upload the file here. You get one row per address with name, country, total spent and orders, split by the Accepts Email Marketing column: customers who said yes in one file, those who didn't in another, repeats merged.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I turn a Shopify customer export into an email list?

  1. In Shopify admin, open Customers and press Export. Choose All customers (or a segment) and CSV for Excel or plain CSV. Shopify emails you the file for large stores.
  2. Upload customers_export.csv here, or an orders export from Orders > Export if you want buyers from a date range.
  3. Leave Keep only customers who accept email marketing ticked for a newsletter or campaign list; untick it for a list of every customer.
  4. Download the email list, and the not-subscribed file if you need it for order or account emails.

Example

You enter
A Shopify customers export with 6 customers: 3 with Accepts Email Marketing yes, 2 with no (one at gmial.com) and 1 phone-only customer with no email.
You get
3 subscribers in the email list with name, country, total spent, orders and tags; 2 non-subscribers in a separate file with the reason Did not accept email marketing; 1 customer counted as having no address.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

What does Accepts Email Marketing mean in a Shopify export?

It is the customer's email marketing consent as Shopify recorded it: yes when they ticked the marketing box at checkout, signed up through a form or were marked subscribed, no otherwise. Older exports call the column Accepts Marketing. Shopify lists the columns in its customer export help.

A no customer can still get emails about their order, such as receipts and shipping updates. Marketing email to them needs another legal basis; in the UK, for example, the ICO's guidance on electronic mail marketing explains the narrow "soft opt-in" for existing customers. The tool keeps the two groups in separate files so they don't get mixed up in your email platform.

Can I build the list from a Shopify orders export instead?

Yes. The orders export has one row per line item, so a customer with a three-item order appears three times, and the order total is filled only on the first row. The tool folds those rows into one per address, counts distinct orders, adds up totals and takes Accepts Marketing from the customer's newest order.

Use the orders export when you want buyers from a date range or a product, since Shopify lets you filter orders before export.

Why check a Shopify list before a campaign?

Shopify stores what the shopper typed at checkout. Typos like gmial.com, made-up addresses typed to get a discount code, and inboxes that closed since the last order all end up in the export. Sending a campaign to them bounces, and Gmail and Yahoo look at bounces and complaints when they decide where your mail goes (Gmail sender guidelines).

Fix typo domains with the email typo corrector, then check the rest free with the button under the result.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Store owners
Pull the subscribers out of the customer export before moving to Klaviyo, Mailchimp or Omnisend, with spend and order counts as fields.
Agencies
Get a client's consented list from one export without logging into their email platform.
Wholesale and B2B shops
Filter by tags such as wholesale in the download and keep company names for account emails.
Migrations
Keep subscribers and non-subscribers apart when importing into a new platform, so consent travels with the address.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • It reads the consent Shopify recorded; it can't tell whether that consent is valid where your customer lives.
  • It can't tell which addresses still have a working inbox.
  • Shopify's export is the source: columns you didn't export can't be added here.
  • An orders export only includes customers who ordered in the exported range.

Common questions

How do I export customer emails from Shopify?
Customers > Export > All customers > CSV. The file has an Email column and an Accepts Email Marketing column; upload it here to get the subscribers as a clean list.
How do I export only subscribed customers from Shopify?
Filter the customer list by Email subscription status = Subscribed before exporting, or export everyone and let this tool split subscribers from non-subscribers.
Why are some customers missing from the list?
Customers with no email address, such as phone-only accounts, are counted and left out. Repeated addresses are merged into one row.
Can I import the result into Klaviyo or Mailchimp?
Yes. The download is a plain CSV with an email column first, plus name, country, total spent, orders and tags as extra fields.
Is my customer file uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser and nothing leaves your device unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
