Klaviyo list cleaner: check a profiles export before you send

To clean a Klaviyo list, export the profiles and drop the CSV here. The checker flags bad syntax, duplicates, typo domains, domains with no mail server and disposable addresses, and removes anyone on your suppressed-profiles export. Klaviyo suppresses an address after it bounces, so this finds the bad ones before they cost you a bounce.

Runs in your browser. Only the domains are sent, to look up their mail servers; addresses stay on your device.

Any address here is taken off the clean list, including the same Gmail inbox written another way.

How do I check a Klaviyo list for bad emails?

  1. In Klaviyo, export the profiles you plan to email (a list or segment) as a CSV.
  2. Drop the file in. The Email column is found automatically.
  3. Optional: in Audience, Profiles, open View suppressed profiles, export that list and paste it into the remove box.
  4. Press Check the profiles and download the clean list and the flagged rows.
  5. These checks use no mail server. Sign in with Google to check which mailboxes exist with the free email checks.

What does Klaviyo do with bounced emails?

According to Klaviyo's help centre, hard bounces are suppressed automatically, and an address that soft-bounces 7 times in a row is suppressed, counting only soft bounces from the past 2 years. Marketing emails skip suppressed profiles. Klaviyo recommends keeping suppressed profiles rather than deleting them, since deleting skews segments.

The point is the order: a profile is suppressed after a bounce. A new import with typo and dead addresses costs one bounce each first, and a first campaign with many bounces is the kind of result sending platforms and mailbox providers react to. Checking before the send removes those rows ahead of time.

Where do I find suppressed profiles in Klaviyo?

Per Klaviyo, go to Audience, then Profiles and click View suppressed profiles, where you can export the list to CSV. Paste that file in the remove box so a suppressed address can't return through a new import or another list. Keep the file as your own suppression list too, in case you change platform (suppression lists).

Should I clean a Klaviyo list before importing or before sending?

Before importing, when possible. The checks here are quick and reversible because they work on a copy. The longer walk-through, including inactive segments, is in how to clean a Klaviyo list.

Check a profile export before a big sale or a win-back campaign.
Agencies
Clean a client's imported list before connecting it to flows.
Lifecycle teams
Remove duplicates and dead domains before building segments.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • It reads an exported file. It doesn't connect to Klaviyo or change anything in it.
  • It doesn't score engagement; use Klaviyo's own segments for inactive profiles.
  • The browser check covers the first 5,000 rows. The free checks take the whole file.
  • No mailbox check runs on this page. A clean file can still contain addresses that don't exist.

Common questions

How do I clean my Klaviyo list?
Export the profiles, check the file for bad syntax, duplicates, typo, dead and disposable domains, remove suppressed profiles, verify the remaining mailboxes, then re-import or segment what's left.
When does Klaviyo suppress an email?
Per Klaviyo, hard bounces are suppressed automatically, and addresses that soft-bounce 7 times in a row are suppressed, counting only the past 2 years.
Should I delete suppressed profiles in Klaviyo?
Klaviyo recommends keeping them, because deleting them skews the segments you use for business insights.
Is my export uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Only the unique domains are sent for a DNS lookup.
Does it replace a mailbox check?
No. It removes what can be found without a mail server. A mailbox check is what shows addresses that look right but don't exist.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
