Drip subscribers to email list: unsubscribed people set aside, tags kept

In short: Reads a Drip people CSV: the status column (active or unsubscribed) decides what is kept, tags are kept as labels and repeats merge; Drip's own columns such as created_at, confirmed_at and lead_score are recognised. Limit: Drip's help lists the exported data but not every exact heading; the email, status and tags columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.

In Drip, go to People > Active, filter to the segment you want (or leave the filter blank for the whole list), click Actions > Export to CSV and Okay. Drip emails a link to the CSV to the address you're logged in as. Upload the file here: unsubscribed people are set aside, active people are kept and repeats merge with their tags. Check what's left live before you send.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the list before the next broadcast?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files; catch-all domains are marked. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Send to the valid file, and keep the set-aside file as your suppression list.
Check the addresses

How do I turn a Drip export into a clean email list?

  1. In Drip, go to People > Active.
  2. Use the filter to build the segment you want to export, or leave it blank to export your entire list.
  3. Click Actions > Export to CSV, then Okay.
  4. Open the email Drip sends to the address you're logged in as (Settings > User Settings), download the CSV and upload it here, or paste it.

Example

You enter
A Drip people export with 6 rows and the email, status and tags columns: active and unsubscribed, Ana twice (once in capitals, different tags) and a gmial.com typo.
You get
4 subscribers in the list (Ana merged with tags customer, newsletter, webinar) and Leo set aside as unsubscribed. Nobody is set aside as bounced: Drip's export has no bounce column.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How is Drip's status read?

Drip's help says the status column in a people export is active or unsubscribed. Active people are kept; unsubscribed people are set aside (untick the option to keep them). A repeated address merges into one row, and an unsubscribe on any copy wins.

The export has no bounce column, so an active address can still be one that no longer exists. That's what a live mailbox check finds.

What about confirmed_at?

confirmed_at is the time a person confirmed their subscription in Drip. It's recognised but not used to set anyone aside: a blank confirmed_at isn't an unsubscribe, and only the status column says who opted out.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Ecommerce stores
Move a Drip list to another platform without re-subscribing anyone who left.
Agencies
Clean a client's Drip export before a migration and keep the unsubscribes as a suppression file.
Marketers
Get a plain email column with tags kept out of a Drip segment for a one-off send.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Drip's help lists the exported data but not every exact heading; the email, status and tags columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.
  • The export doesn't mark bounced or complained people, so none can be set aside for that reason here.
  • It can't tell which addresses have a working inbox today; that needs a live mailbox check.

Common questions

Which Drip columns does it read?
email, status and tags. Drip's help lists id, created_at, confirmed_at, email series campaign names, referrer, landing_url, ip_address, lead_score, lifetime_value, user_id and custom fields too; those are recognised but not copied. The notes above the result say which columns were found.
Can I export only one segment?
Yes. Filter People > Active to the segment before you choose Actions > Export to CSV; the same columns come with every people export.
Is my subscriber list uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

Sources

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
