Klaviyo profiles to email list: consent read, suppressed and unsubscribed profiles set aside

In short: Reads a Klaviyo list or segment CSV: Email marketing consent sorted into subscribed, never subscribed and unsubscribed; any Email suppressions value sets the profile aside even when consent says Subscribed; repeats merged. Limit: Klaviyo doesn't publish the exact headings or value format of Email marketing consent and Email suppressions; they're found by name, so check the notes above the result.

In Klaviyo, open Audience > Lists & segments, open the list or segment, choose Manage list (or Manage segment) > Export to CSV, include Email marketing consent and Email suppressions, and click Start Export. Upload the CSV here: unsubscribed profiles and any profile with a suppression are set aside, never subscribed profiles are marked so you can leave them out, and repeats merge. Check what's left live before you send.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the list before the next campaign?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files; catch-all domains are marked. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Send to the valid file, and keep the set-aside file as a suppression list.

How do I turn a Klaviyo export into a clean email list?

  1. In Klaviyo, go to Audience > Lists & segments and open the list or segment. To export everyone, Klaviyo suggests a segment that includes all profiles.
  2. Open Manage list (or Manage segment) and select Export to CSV. You need the Owner, Admin or Analyst role, or a custom role that can export profiles.
  3. Choose the properties to include, with Email marketing consent and Email suppressions, and click Start Export. Later downloads are under Settings > Other > Downloads for 30 days.
  4. Upload the CSV here. Tick the option to keep only subscribed profiles if you want never subscribed left out too, then download the list and the set-aside file.

Example

You enter
A Klaviyo segment export with 6 rows: Email Marketing Consent Subscribed, Unsubscribed and Never subscribed, Email Suppressions Hard bounce on a profile still marked Subscribed, and one phone-only profile.
You get
3 profiles in the list (Kim as Unknown for Never subscribed), Leo set aside as unsubscribed and Mia set aside as suppressed, and 1 row counted as having no email.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

Why read Email suppressions as well as consent?

Klaviyo keeps consent and suppression apart. Its help notes that an export of the email marketing consent property can show Subscribed for a profile that is suppressed, and says to export the Email suppressions property to see it. Suppressions come from hard bounces, repeated soft bounces, spam complaints and manual suppression.

So any value in Email suppressions sets the profile aside first, whatever the consent column says.

What happens to never subscribed profiles?

Never subscribed means the profile hasn't opted in or out. Klaviyo warns it doesn't establish that you have consent. Those profiles stay in the list marked Unknown by default; tick the subscribed-only option to move them to the set-aside file.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Ecommerce stores
Move Klaviyo profiles to another platform with suppressions honoured.
Agencies
Pull the subscribed profiles out of a client's segment before a migration.
Marketers
Separate never subscribed shoppers from people who opted in.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Klaviyo doesn't publish the exact headings or value format of Email marketing consent and Email suppressions; they're found by name, so check the notes above the result.
  • If the export has no Email suppressions column, suppressed profiles marked Subscribed can't be spotted; export again with that property.
  • It can't tell which addresses have a working inbox today; that needs a live mailbox check.

Common questions

Which Klaviyo columns does it read?
Email, First Name, Last Name, Phone Number, Email Marketing Consent and Email Suppressions. Columns such as Profile Created On and Last Active are recognised but not copied. The notes above the result say which were found.
Does the export say which lists a profile is on?
No. Klaviyo's help says list and segment membership can't be exported, so export each list or segment you need on its own.
Is my list uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
