ActiveCampaign contacts to email list: unsubscribed and bounced set aside

In short: Reads an ActiveCampaign list export with its Status column, keeps Active contacts, sets aside Unsubscribed and Bounced ones, marks Unconfirmed as unknown, merges repeats and keeps phone, organization and tags. Limit: ActiveCampaign doesn't publish a fixed export heading list; Status and Tags are found by name (inferred headings), so check the notes.

Export by list in ActiveCampaign (Contacts > Lists, then Export next to the list) and choose the status Any so every contact comes with its Status. Upload the CSV here: Active is kept, Unsubscribed and Bounced are set aside, Unconfirmed is marked unknown, repeats merge, and you download a list ready for the next tool. An all-contacts export leaves Status blank.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the ActiveCampaign list before the next send?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Import the valid file into the next platform, or back into ActiveCampaign.

How do I turn an ActiveCampaign export into a clean email list?

  1. In ActiveCampaign, open Contacts > Lists and choose Export next to the list (a list export fills the Status column; the all-contacts export leaves it blank).
  2. Pick status Any to see every contact, choose the fields and export. Download the CSV from the email or from Contacts > Exports (the link expires after 7 days).
  3. Upload it here, or paste it.
  4. Choose: set aside unsubscribes (on to start), or keep only Active contacts. Download the email list and the set-aside file.

Example

You enter
An ActiveCampaign list export (status Any) with 6 contacts: 3 Active, 1 Unconfirmed, 1 Unsubscribed and 1 Bounced, with tags and organizations.
You get
4 in the email list (3 Active and the Unconfirmed one as Unknown), 2 set aside: the unsubscribe and the bounce. Ticking subscribed-only also sets aside the Unconfirmed contact.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

What do ActiveCampaign's list statuses mean?

Each contact has a status on each list: Active (can be sent to), Unconfirmed (double opt-in not finished), Unsubscribed (clicked the unsubscribe link or replied STOP) and Bounced (mail to it failed). The status is per list, so a contact unsubscribed from one list can still be Active on another.

Active is kept, Unconfirmed is kept as Unknown (tick "keep only subscribed" to set it aside), and Unsubscribed and Bounced are set aside. If the same person is on two lists in your file, an unsubscribe or bounce on any copy wins.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Teams switching platforms
Move Active contacts out with tags, and bring the Unsubscribed and Bounced ones as a suppression file.
Marketers trimming a contact plan
See how many contacts are actually sendable before paying for the next tier.
Agencies
Clean a client's list export before a migration or a re-engagement send.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • ActiveCampaign doesn't publish a fixed export heading list; Status and Tags are found by name (inferred headings), so check the notes.
  • Status is per list; contacts from different lists are merged and an unsubscribe on any copy wins.
  • Active means mail hasn't failed yet, not that the inbox still exists.

Common questions

Why is the Status column empty in my export?
ActiveCampaign's help says Status is blank on exports that aren't by list. Export from Contacts > Lists to get it.
Are tags kept?
Yes. Tags from every copy of a repeated contact are combined into one labels column.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
