AWeber subscribers to email list: unsubscribes and complaints set aside

In short: Reads an AWeber subscriber CSV, keeps subscribed contacts, sets aside unsubscribed, deleted and complained ones, marks unconfirmed as unknown, merges repeats across lists and keeps name and tags. Limit: AWeber doesn't publish its export headings; Status and Tags are found by name and the status words (subscribed, unsubscribed, unconfirmed, complained) are inferred, so check the notes.

In AWeber, open the Subscribers page for the list, set a filter if you need one and click Export CSV. Upload the file here: subscribed is kept, unsubscribed and spam complaints are set aside, unconfirmed is kept as unknown, repeats from several lists merge, and you download a list ready for the next platform.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the AWeber list before the first send elsewhere?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Import the valid file into the new platform, and the set-aside file as its suppression list.

How do I turn an AWeber export into a clean email list?

  1. In AWeber, go to the Subscribers page for the list. Export with no status filter to get everyone with their status, or choose Currently Subscribed to leave unsubscribes out.
  2. Click Export CSV. For every list at once, use Backup Data, which emails a zip.
  3. Upload the CSV here, or paste it.
  4. Choose: set aside unsubscribes (on to start), or keep only subscribed. Download the email list and the set-aside file.

Example

You enter
An AWeber subscriber CSV with 6 rows and a Status column: 3 subscribed, 1 unsubscribed, 1 unconfirmed and 1 complained.
You get
4 in the email list (3 subscribed and the unconfirmed one as Unknown), 2 set aside: the unsubscribe and the complaint (marked as bounced, cleaned or complained). Tags are kept as labels.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

Which AWeber subscribers should move?

Subscribed contacts move. Unsubscribed contacts, and anyone who marked your email as spam, go into the next platform's suppression list so they aren't mailed again. Unconfirmed subscribers never clicked the confirmation link; they're kept as Unknown and set aside if you tick "keep only subscribed".

The same person on two lists appears twice in a backup; the copies merge, and an unsubscribe or complaint on either wins.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • AWeber doesn't publish its export headings; Status and Tags are found by name and the status words (subscribed, unsubscribed, unconfirmed, complained) are inferred, so check the notes.
  • Old subscribers can be marked subscribed and still have a closed inbox.
  • It can't tell which addresses still have a working inbox.

Common questions

Does the export include unsubscribed people?
It can. AWeber keeps unsubscribed subscribers on the list until you delete them, so an export without a filter includes them with their status. This tool sets them aside.
Are tags kept?
Yes. Tags are combined into one labels column so you can rebuild segments.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
