How to Export AWeber Subscribers (and Move Only the Ones You Should)

··3 min read

To export AWeber subscribers, open the Subscribers page, filter to Currently Subscribed, and click Export CSV. AWeber exports whatever your current search shows, so the filter decides what's in the file; for the whole account at once, use Backup Data. Move subscribed contacts as your audience, carry unsubscribes into the next tool's suppression list, leave pending contacts behind, merge people on several lists, and check the addresses before the first send from the new platform.

The free AWeber subscribers to email list tool sorts and merges the export in your browser. Here is each step.

Step 1: export the subscribers

AWeber's help article How do I export my subscribers? (read 2 November 2026) gives the steps:

  1. Go to the Subscribers page for the list.
  2. Filter or search for the subscribers you want. Only the current search is exported.
  3. Click Export CSV.

For every list in the account, use Backup Data, which exports a zip.

AWeber's help on merging lists says "Be sure to first select your Currently Subscribed segment" before exporting to move people. That's the safe default for a migration export.

Column names aren't documented. AWeber doesn't publish its export headings. Look for the email, status and tags columns in your file before filtering; the AWeber tool finds them by name and says which it used.

Step 2: sort by status

Status What it means In the next platform
Subscribed Confirmed and receiving your email Import as subscribed
Unsubscribed Opted out, or unsubscribed by you or AWeber Import as unsubscribed or suppressed, never as audience
Pending (unconfirmed) Signed up but never clicked the confirmation link Leave behind

AWeber's help on manual unsubscribes says those contacts "remain in your list with an "unsubscribed" status" and get no further mail. AWeber may also unsubscribe addresses itself to protect deliverability, and it has an Undeliverable filter for addresses it can no longer mail. Treat both as do-not-mail in the next tool.

Why keep unsubscribes at all? Because the next platform doesn't know about them. If an old file is ever imported again, a suppression list is the only thing stopping you from mailing people who opted out. The suppression list merger combines opt-outs from several tools into one file.

Step 3: merge repeats across lists

The same person on two lists appears twice in a backup. Keep one row per address, combine tags into one column so you can rebuild segments, and let an unsubscribe on any copy win: if someone left one list, don't assume they want the other.

Step 4: consent goes with the list

Moving platforms doesn't change what people agreed to. Subscribers who confirmed a sign-up for your newsletter can get your newsletter from the new tool; the opt-out and your postal address still go in every message (our post on what a CAN-SPAM footer needs lists the items). The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide sets the US floor; UK, EU and Canadian rules are stricter.

Step 5: check the addresses

Subscribed doesn't mean the inbox still works. An AWeber list that's been quiet for a year carries closed work addresses and abandoned personal ones, and a new platform that sees a high bounce rate on its first campaign may review or pause the account.

  1. Download the subscribed list from the AWeber tool.
  2. Upload it on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
  3. Import the valid file as subscribed, and the invalid file with your suppression list.

Risky means unconfirmed, not bad: catch-all business domains and Microsoft's consumer domains (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) often can't be confirmed either way. Our post on verifying a list before switching ESP covers the import and the first sends from the new account.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

Sorting and merging are free and run in your browser; nothing is uploaded. For the mailbox check, upload the list on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.

Common questions

How do I export my subscribers from AWeber?

Go to the Subscribers page, filter or search for the subscribers you want, and click Export CSV. AWeber's help says only the current search is exported. To export everything in the account, use Backup Data, which produces a zip.

Does the AWeber export include unsubscribed people?

It can. AWeber's help says manually unsubscribed contacts remain in your list with an unsubscribed status. An export without a Currently Subscribed filter includes them; put them in your next platform's suppression list rather than deleting them.

Should I move pending AWeber subscribers?

No. Pending contacts signed up but never confirmed, and AWeber removes them after a while. Mailing them from a new tool is mailing people who never finished opting in.

What if the same person is on several AWeber lists?

A backup or several exports will list them more than once. Merge to one row per address, and let an unsubscribe on any list win.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
