How to Export BigCommerce Customers to an Email List
To get an email list out of BigCommerce, export your customers with the Bulk Edit template, then decide carefully who has agreed to marketing, because the file's email flag is about review and cart emails. In the control panel that's Customers > Export. Add newsletter signups and guest buyers from their own exports if you need them, merge repeated addresses, and check the list before you import it into Klaviyo, Mailchimp or another email tool.
The free BigCommerce customers to email list tool does the sorting and merging in your browser. Here is each step.
Step 1: export the customers
BigCommerce's help on importing and exporting customers (read 2 November 2026) gives the steps:
- In the control panel, go to Customers > Export.
- Choose a Template. Bulk Edit has most fields; Default "includes only basic customer details" (name, email, phone and addresses). Custom templates live under Settings > Export templates.
- Choose CSV as the file format. For 1,000 or more customers, BigCommerce recommends saving the export to the server and downloading it over WebDAV.
- Click Continue, then Export my customers to a csv/xml file, and download the file when it's ready.
To export only some customers, tick them in Customers > All customers and choose Export selected customers.
What's in the Bulk Edit file. The help lists Email, First Name, Last Name, Company, Phone, Notes, Store Credit, Customer Group, the address fields, Form Fields and Receive Marketing Emails. Customers with several addresses get numbered address columns ("Address First Name - 1"), and the email header is called Email in one place and Email Address in another, so check your own file. The BigCommerce tool finds the columns by name and says which ones it used.
Step 2: find everyone who isn't in that file
The customer export only covers people with a customer account. Two groups can be missing:
| Group | Where they are |
|---|---|
| Guest checkouts | The orders export, with the billing email on each order |
| Newsletter signups from the storefront footer | Stored separately from customer accounts or sent straight to a connected email app, depending on setup. BigCommerce community answers point to an export under Marketing > Email Marketing; the official help doesn't document it, so check your control panel |
If you need them, export those too and merge the files first with the CSV merge tool. Guest buyers who didn't tick a marketing box are customers, not subscribers.
Step 3: decide which column means consent
This is where BigCommerce lists go wrong. The Bulk Edit file's Receive Marketing Emails column holds Y or N, and BigCommerce's help defines it as whether the customer "opted in or out of receiving product review requests or Abandoned Cart Saver emails". Older files and some templates label it Receive Review/Abandoned Cart Emails. Either way it covers review requests and cart reminders, which isn't the same as agreeing to a newsletter.
| Signal | For a promotional email |
|---|---|
| A newsletter signup (from the storefront form or your email app) | Send |
| Receive Marketing Emails: N | Don't send. Add to your new tool's suppression list |
| Receive Marketing Emails: Y, no newsletter signup | Weak. Confirm what your checkout asked before using it for marketing |
| No consent signal at all | Unconsented until you know otherwise |
Rules depend on where your customers are. In the US, the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide sets the floor for commercial email; in the UK and EU, existing customers may fall under a soft opt-in only if they were given a chance to refuse at checkout.
Step 4: merge repeats and keep the customer group
A customer who registered twice, or who appears in both the customer and the orders export, should end up as one row. Let a "no" on any copy win. Keep the customer group (retail, wholesale, trade) as a label so you can rebuild segments in the next tool.
Step 5: check the addresses
B2B and wholesale stores carry a particular risk: trade customers sign up with work addresses, and work inboxes close when people change jobs. A list of customers who ordered two years ago can contain closed mailboxes that a consumer list doesn't, and they bounce on the first send from the domain your order confirmations come from.
- Download the email list from the BigCommerce tool.
- Fix obvious domain typos with the email typo corrector.
- Upload it on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
- Import the valid file, with its consent value, into your email tool.
Risky means unconfirmed, not bad: catch-all business domains, common on company email, and Microsoft's consumer domains (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) often can't be confirmed either way. If the list is years old, our post on mailing an old email list covers pacing.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Sorting and merging are free and run in your browser; nothing is uploaded. For the mailbox check, upload the list on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
How do I export customers from BigCommerce?
In the control panel, go to Customers > Export, pick the Bulk Edit template and CSV, click Continue, then Export my customers to a csv/xml file, and download it when it is ready. To export some customers, tick them in All customers and choose Export selected customers.
Does the BigCommerce customer export show who subscribed to the newsletter?
Not always. Newsletter signups from the storefront can be stored apart from customer accounts, and BigCommerce documents the customer file's Receive Marketing Emails flag as covering product review requests and Abandoned Cart Saver emails. Check what your store asked customers before treating it as newsletter consent.
Are guest checkouts in the customer export?
No. Only customers with an account are. Guest buyers' addresses are in the orders export.
Can I import a BigCommerce export into Klaviyo or Mailchimp?
Yes. Keep the customers who agreed to marketing, carry their consent across, and check the addresses first so a new account doesn't start with a high bounce rate.
Check your list before you send
Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
