BigCommerce customers to email list: one row per customer, opt-outs set aside

In short: Reads the customers CSV from BigCommerce (Customers > Export, Bulk Edit template), reads a newsletter, marketing or Receive Review/Abandoned Cart Emails? column when the file has one, sets aside opt-outs, merges repeats and keeps company, phone and customer group. Limit: Header names depend on the export template and aren't all documented; columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.

To get an email list from BigCommerce, open Customers in the control panel, choose Export, pick the Bulk Edit template and CSV, and upload the file here. Each customer becomes one row with company, phone and customer group; customers marked as not wanting emails are set aside, and repeated addresses merge.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the BigCommerce list before a campaign?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Import the valid file into Klaviyo, Mailchimp or your email platform.

How do I export BigCommerce customers to an email list?

  1. In the BigCommerce control panel, open Customers > Export. Pick the Bulk Edit export template and CSV.
  2. Upload the CSV here, or paste it.
  3. Choose: set aside customers marked as not wanting emails (on to start), or keep only customers marked yes.
  4. Download the email list and the set-aside file with the reason per address.

Example

You enter
A BigCommerce Bulk Edit customer export with 6 customers in Wholesale and Retail groups; one marked N for Receive Review/Abandoned Cart Emails? and one with no email.
You get
4 in the email list with company, phone and customer group kept; the N customer set aside; 1 counted as having no address. The notes name Receive Review/Abandoned Cart Emails? as the column consent was read from.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

Which column says a BigCommerce customer wants email?

It depends on the template and your store's settings. A newsletter or accepts-marketing column is used first when the export has one; otherwise the Receive Review/Abandoned Cart Emails? column is read as the closest signal. The note above the result names the column that was used, so you can judge whether it matches the consent you need.

Newsletter signups from the storefront footer can be held separately from customer accounts. If your store keeps them apart, export that list too and run it through the same tool, or merge the two files first with the CSV merge tool.

Why do B2B store lists bounce more?

Wholesale and trade customers sign up with work addresses, and work inboxes close when people change jobs. A list of customers who ordered two years ago can carry a share of closed mailboxes that a consumer list doesn't. Those bounce on the first send and count against the domain your order emails come from.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

BigCommerce merchants
Move customers into Klaviyo or Mailchimp without mailing people who said no to emails.
B2B and wholesale stores
Pull trade customers by customer group, with company names kept for personalisation.
Agencies
Clean a client's customer export before setting up their first flow.
Store migrations
Bring a deduplicated customer list to a new platform with consent marked.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Header names depend on the export template and aren't all documented; columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.
  • The review/abandoned-cart flag isn't the same as newsletter consent; check what your store collected.
  • Guest checkouts without an account aren't in the customer export.
  • It can't tell which addresses still have a working inbox.

Common questions

Which export template should I use?
The Bulk Edit template. BigCommerce sets its headers to match the import format, and it includes most customer fields. A custom template works too as long as it has the email column.
Is the customer group kept?
Yes, in the labels column, so you can rebuild wholesale and retail segments in your email tool.
Are guest checkouts included?
Only customers with an account are in the customer export. Guest buyers appear in the orders export; any CSV with an email column can be run here.
Is my customer list uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
