Marketo leads to email list: unsubscribed, invalid, blocklisted and suspended set aside

In short: Reads a Marketo smart list or static list export, sets aside people marked Unsubscribed, Email Invalid, Black Listed (Blocklisted) or Marketing Suspended, merges repeated addresses and keeps name, company and phone. Limit: Field labels vary by instance and language (Black Listed or Blocklisted); columns are found by name and the notes say which were read.

Export a smart list or static list from Marketo with the Unsubscribed, Email Invalid, Marketing Suspended and Black Listed fields, and upload the CSV here. People marked true in any of them are set aside with the reason, repeated addresses merge, and you download an email list to verify before a program or a move to another platform.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check a Marketo list before the next program?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Import the valid file back into Marketo or the next platform, and the set-aside file as a suppression list.
Check the addresses

How do I turn a Marketo export into a clean email list?

  1. In Marketo, open Database and pick the smart list or static list you want (or build a smart list of everyone).
  2. On the People tab, add the Unsubscribed, Email Invalid, Marketing Suspended and Black Listed (Blocklisted) columns to the view, then export the list as a CSV.
  3. Upload or paste the file here and press Build email list. Untick the option if you want unsubscribed people kept.
  4. Download the email list and the set-aside file; keep the set-aside file as a suppression list for the next platform.

Example

You enter
A Marketo smart list export of 7 people with Unsubscribed, Email Invalid, Marketing Suspended and Black Listed columns: one true in each of the four, three with all four false.
You get
3 addresses kept ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected]); 4 set aside: 1 unsubscribed and 3 Email Invalid, Black Listed or Marketing Suspended.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

Which Marketo fields mark a lead you shouldn't email?

Four true/false fields in the Marketo person record: Unsubscribed (the person opted out), Email Invalid (an email to the address hard-bounced), Marketing Suspended (taken out of marketing sends) and Black Listed, shown as Blocklisted in newer instances. Marketo won't send marketing email to any of them. Here, Email Invalid, Black Listed and Marketing Suspended are always set aside; Unsubscribed is set aside unless you untick the option.

Email Invalid only flips after a send fails, so leads from list imports, trade-show scans and forms you haven't mailed yet are unchecked. Marketo instances are often priced by database size, so dead leads cost money as well as bounces.

Should you clean a Marketo list before moving platforms?

Yes. A new platform, or a new sending domain, has no history with mailbox providers, and Google's sender guidelines judge it on its first sends. Moving the unsubscribed and blocklisted people across as a suppression list, and checking the rest, keeps the first program from bouncing. The Pardot and Marketo import guide covers the import side.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Marketing ops
Pull a clean list of a database before a migration, with every unsubscribed, invalid and blocklisted person kept for the suppression list.
Event marketers
Clean a trade-show or webinar list that was imported into Marketo before the follow-up program.
Agencies
Hand a client's Marketo export to another platform with opt-outs kept apart.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Field labels vary by instance and language (Black Listed or Blocklisted); columns are found by name and the notes say which were read.
  • Program-level or subscription-center opt-outs that aren't in the four fields aren't detected unless the file says so.
  • It can't tell which addresses still have a working inbox.

Common questions

Which columns does the Marketo export need?
Email Address, plus Unsubscribed, Email Invalid, Marketing Suspended and Black Listed (or Blocklisted) to set those people aside. Columns are found by name, so add them to the list view before exporting.
What does Email Invalid mean in Marketo?
Marketo marks a person Email Invalid when an email to them hard-bounces, and stops sending to them. It says nothing about people you haven't emailed yet.
What if my export has none of those fields?
Then opt-outs can't be read and every person is kept, which the notes say. Add the fields to the view and export again.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
