MailerLite subscribers to email list: unsubscribed, bounced and junk set aside

In short: Reads a MailerLite subscriber CSV: Status sorted into active (kept), unconfirmed (kept as unknown), unsubscribed (set aside) and bounced or junk (always set aside); groups kept as labels, repeats merged. Limit: MailerLite's help doesn't list the export's column headings; the email, status and groups columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.

In MailerLite, go to Subscribers, pick the status in the Active subscribers dropdown, select all subscribers with the dropdown arrow next to the Subscriber column, add Status and Groups under Set columns, then click Actions and choose CSV file. Only account administrators can export. Upload the CSV here: unsubscribed subscribers are set aside, bounced and junk ones too, and groups stay as labels. Check what's left live before you send.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the list before the next campaign?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files; catch-all domains are marked. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Send to the valid file, and keep the set-aside file as your suppression list.
Check the addresses

How do I turn a MailerLite export into a clean email list?

  1. In MailerLite, go to Subscribers and pick the status you want from the Active subscribers dropdown (All subscribers gives a file that doubles as a suppression list).
  2. Use the dropdown arrow next to the Subscriber column to select all subscribers in the list, not just the current page.
  3. Click Set columns and add Status and Groups; only the columns shown are exported.
  4. Click Actions and choose CSV file, then upload the file here, or paste it.

Example

You enter
A MailerLite subscriber export with 6 rows and the Subscriber, Status and Groups columns: Active, Unsubscribed, Bounced, Unconfirmed and Junk, and an info@ address.
You get
3 subscribers in the list (Kim as Unknown for Unconfirmed, groups kept as labels), Leo set aside as unsubscribed, and Mia and Raj set aside as bounced or junk.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How is each MailerLite status read?

Active subscribers are kept; MailerLite says only active subscribers receive newsletters, one-to-one emails and automations. Unconfirmed subscribers signed up through double opt-in and haven't clicked the verification link, so they stay in the list marked Unknown; tick the subscribed-only option to set them aside.

Unsubscribed subscribers are set aside (untick the option to keep them). Bounced and Junk are always set aside: MailerLite labels an address bounced after a hard bounce or three soft bounces in a row, and junk after a spam complaint.

Why is the Status column missing?

MailerLite exports only the columns visible on the subscriber overview. If Status wasn't added under Set columns, the file can't say who unsubscribed, so every row is kept; the file then holds whichever status you picked in the Active subscribers dropdown.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Small businesses
Move a MailerLite list to another tool with unsubscribes and spam complaints left behind.
Newsletter writers
Get a plain list of active subscribers with their groups for a one-off send.
Agencies
Clean a client's MailerLite export before a migration and keep a suppression file.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • MailerLite's help doesn't list the export's column headings; the email, status and groups columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.
  • Only the columns shown under Set columns are exported, so a file without Status can't be sorted by status.
  • It can't tell which addresses have a working inbox today; that needs a live mailbox check.

Common questions

Which MailerLite columns does it read?
The subscriber's email, name and last name, Status and Groups when you added them under Set columns. The notes above the result say which columns were found.
Why can't I see the export option?
MailerLite lets only account administrators export subscribers. Ask the account administrator to export the file.
Is my subscriber list uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

Sources

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
