WhatsApp number formatter: a whole list in the international format WhatsApp needs
In short: Turns local and messy numbers into WhatsApp's international format: E.164 with the +, digits only for wa.me links and broadcast or API imports, a wa.me link per row, with landline, toll-free and invalid numbers marked. Limit: It can't tell you a number has a WhatsApp account; nothing outside WhatsApp can, within its terms.
WhatsApp needs every number in full international format: the country code, then the number, with no leading 0, spaces or brackets. +44 7400 123456 becomes 447400123456 in a wa.me link. Paste a list or upload a CSV, pick the country for local numbers, and download each row's WhatsApp number, digits and link.
Price: this tool is free. Live line type and carrier lookups come with Pro + Phone at $49.99/mo; email checking is from $9/mo. See pricing

How do I format phone numbers for WhatsApp?
- Paste numbers one per line, or upload a CSV; the phone column is found for you.
- Pick the default country for numbers written without a + country code, such as
(415) 555-2671or07400 123456. - Press Format for WhatsApp. Each number gets an E.164 version, digits only and a wa.me link, with the range it was issued from.
- Download the WhatsApp-ready file (invalid numbers and repeats left out) or the full report with your original columns.
Example
- You enter
- A CSV of 7 contacts with US default country:
(415) 555-2671,+44 7400 123456,+44 20 7946 0958,+91 98765 43210,+1 800 555 0199,0044 7400 123456and12345. - You get
- 6 formatted:
+14155552671(wa.me digits14155552671, type not clear from the number), two UK mobile rows with the second marked as a repeat, a UK landline range marked WhatsApp Business only, an Indian mobile and a US toll-free number marked as a service number.12345is set aside as not a valid number. - Limits
- Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.
What format does WhatsApp need for phone numbers?
Full international format, written from the country code: no +, no leading 0, no brackets or dashes in a link. WhatsApp's click to chat help gives https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX as the shape and says to omit zeros, brackets and dashes. The Cloud API's to field takes the same number with its country code, and the phone numbers reference uses that form for business numbers too. Both are the E.164 number without the +.
The common mistakes are the local ones: a UK 07400 123456 saved without 44, a US (415) 555-2671 without the 1, or 0044 dialled as an international prefix. This tool fixes them from the default country you pick, the same way a phone would dial them. Numbers with an extension lose it, since WhatsApp can't dial one.
Can a landline be on WhatsApp?
Only through the WhatsApp Business app, which can verify a landline by a voice call instead of an SMS. Regular WhatsApp accounts sit on mobile numbers, so a list for a broadcast or a campaign is mostly mobiles. The tool marks numbers from landline ranges so you can decide, and keeps them in the full report.
Toll-free, premium and other service numbers are marked too; they are almost never personal WhatsApp accounts. In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share area codes, so those numbers come back as "type not clear"; the landline or mobile checker explains why, and a carrier lookup is the only way to split them.
Can I check if a number is on WhatsApp in bulk?
Not honestly from outside WhatsApp. Tools that claim to do it log into WhatsApp accounts and look numbers up, which WhatsApp's terms forbid and which gets those accounts banned. This formatter makes the numbers correct; whether someone uses WhatsApp shows when they reply. More in how to check if a number is on WhatsApp.
One number, three shapes
| Where it goes | Shape | Example |
|---|---|---|
Contacts, CRM, Business API to | E.164 | +447400123456 |
| wa.me link, broadcast CSV | Digits only | 447400123456 |
| Click to chat | wa.me link | https://wa.me/447400123456 |
Excel can strip the + or show long numbers in scientific notation; import the digits column as text.
Who uses this tool, and for what?
- WhatsApp marketers
- Turn a sign-up sheet of local numbers into the digits a broadcast or Business API import expects, with the landlines marked before you pay per message.
- Sales teams
- Add a wa.me link column to a lead sheet so reps can open a chat from the CRM in one click.
- Customer support
- Fix numbers saved without a country code before moving support conversations to WhatsApp.
What can’t this tool tell you?
- It can't tell you a number has a WhatsApp account; nothing outside WhatsApp can, within its terms.
- Line type is the range a number was issued from; a ported number keeps its old range, and US and Canadian numbers can't be split this way.
- Numbers written locally are read with the default country you pick, so a mixed list of local numbers from several countries needs a country code on each.
- Valid format doesn't mean the number is connected or belongs to the person on the row.
Common questions
- How do I write a phone number for WhatsApp?
- Country code first, then the number without its leading 0: +44 7400 123456 for a UK mobile, +1 415 555 2671 for a US number. In a wa.me link, drop the + and all spaces.
- Why does WhatsApp say the number is not on WhatsApp?
- Usually the number is saved without its country code, or with a leading 0 after it. Saved correctly, the other reason is that the person doesn't use WhatsApp on that number.
- Do I need the + in a wa.me link?
- No. WhatsApp's click to chat format is the digits only, country code first: https://wa.me/447400123456.
- Can WhatsApp Business use a landline?
- Yes. The WhatsApp Business app can verify a landline by a voice call. That's why landline ranges are marked rather than removed.
- Is the list uploaded anywhere?
- No. The numbers are formatted in your browser with Google's open-source libphonenumber data.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.
In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what Pro + Phone ($49.99/mo) adds.
- 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: real line type, including US numbers
- Carrier name for every number looked up
- Upload a CSV up to 100,000 rows; emails in the same file get a mailbox check
Plans from $9 a month, cancel anytime, no contract. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. The free tools stay free either way.
