How to Check if a Number Is on WhatsApp (What Works, What Doesn't)

··4 min read

To check if a single number is on WhatsApp, save it in your contacts with its country code and look for it in WhatsApp's new-chat list, or open https://wa.me/ followed by the number. If it has an account, you'll see it; if not, WhatsApp offers to invite it. There's no official way to check a whole list. What you can do at scale is narrow a list down to valid mobile numbers, the ones most likely to have WhatsApp, and then reach people through WhatsApp only once they've opted in.

Check one number: two ways

1. Save it as a contact

  1. Add the number to your phone's contacts in international format, with + and the country code: +447911123456, not 07911 123456. Without the country code, WhatsApp may read it as a number in your own country.
  2. Open WhatsApp and start a new chat.
  3. If the contact appears in the list, the number has a WhatsApp account. If it appears under "Invite to WhatsApp", it doesn't.

If you're not sure what the international format is, paste the number into the free phone number validator; it gives you the E.164 form. We explain the format in E.164 phone number format.

2. Use a click-to-chat link

WhatsApp's click-to-chat links open a chat with any number without saving it first. Use the full number with country code, without the +, spaces or dashes:

https://wa.me/447911123456

If the number has an account, the chat opens. If not, WhatsApp tells you the number isn't on WhatsApp. WhatsApp documents these links in its help center under "click to chat".

Neither method sends anything to the other person. They're fine for a handful of numbers, not for a list.

Why you can't bulk-check a list

WhatsApp doesn't offer a lookup for whether arbitrary numbers have accounts. The WhatsApp Business Platform is built for messaging customers who have agreed to hear from you, not for checking who is on WhatsApp.

"WhatsApp checker" tools you'll find online get their answers through unofficial means, typically automating a WhatsApp account to look numbers up. That has real costs:

Risk Why it matters
Terms of service WhatsApp's terms prohibit unauthorised automated or bulk use of its service
Account bans The account used for checking can be banned, and so can numbers used to message the results
Data protection Sending a contact list to an unknown third party may break privacy rules that apply to you
Accuracy Results can be wrong when WhatsApp changes how its app behaves

We don't offer a WhatsApp check, for these reasons.

What you can check instead: is it a mobile?

Almost every personal WhatsApp account is registered to a mobile number, because signing up needs a code sent by SMS or a voice call to the phone. That makes "is this a valid mobile?" the best honest filter for a list.

Line type Can it have WhatsApp?
Mobile Very often; this is where most accounts are
Landline Only via the WhatsApp Business app, with voice-call verification
VoIP Sometimes, if the number can receive the verification code
Toll-free Rarely
Invalid number No

So a sensible approach for a list:

  1. Remove numbers that can't exist. Typos and missing digits can't be on WhatsApp.
  2. Convert everything to E.164. WhatsApp, like most messaging platforms, works with international format.
  3. Keep the mobiles. Outside North America, the numbering-plan line type tells you this for free: UK 07, Australian 04 and so on. In the US and Canada, mobiles and landlines share area codes, so you need a carrier lookup. See is this a cell phone number? and mobile vs landline lookup.
  4. Ask for permission. Send WhatsApp messages only to people who've opted in to hear from you there, as WhatsApp's business messaging policy requires.

This won't tell you which mobiles have WhatsApp, but it removes the numbers that certainly don't, without breaking anyone's terms.

Narrow a list to mobiles with SimpleVerifier

  1. Export the list as a CSV with a phone column. Emails can stay in the same file.
  2. Upload it on the verifier. Numbers without a country code are read as US numbers, so add country codes for international lists.
  3. Every valid number gets phone_e164, phone_country and phone_type. Outside North America, mobile in phone_type gives you the mobile list.
  4. For US and Canadian numbers, the Email + Phone plan ($49.99/month) adds a live carrier lookup, with phone_line_type (mobile, landline or VoIP) and phone_carrier. You get 5,000 lookups a month, and failed lookups don't count.
  5. Download the valid mobiles in E.164, ready for the opt-in step.

The $29.99 Pro plan includes unlimited format, country and numbering-plan line-type checks. For a whole-list workflow, see bulk phone number validation; for SMS rather than WhatsApp, see validating phone numbers for SMS.

To be clear about the limits: no lookup we run tells you whether a number is on WhatsApp, or whether it's switched on today. It tells you whether a number can exist and what kind of line it is.

Common questions

How can I check if a phone number is on WhatsApp?

Save the number in your phone's contacts with the country code, then open WhatsApp and start a new chat. If the number has a WhatsApp account, it shows in your WhatsApp contact list; if not, WhatsApp offers to invite it. You can also open https://wa.me/ followed by the full number in international format, without the plus sign.

Can I check a whole list of numbers for WhatsApp?

Not through any official WhatsApp tool. The WhatsApp Business Platform lets businesses message people who have opted in, but it doesn't offer a way to look up whether arbitrary numbers have accounts. Third-party bulk checkers rely on unofficial methods that can break WhatsApp's terms and get the number used for checking banned.

Can a landline be on WhatsApp?

Yes, with WhatsApp Business. The WhatsApp Business app can be registered to a landline using a voice call to receive the verification code instead of an SMS. Most personal WhatsApp accounts, though, are on mobile numbers.

Does SimpleVerifier check if a number is on WhatsApp?

No. SimpleVerifier checks whether a number can exist, its country, E.164 format and line type, and on the Email + Phone plan the current carrier and real line type. Knowing which numbers are mobiles narrows a list to the ones most likely to use WhatsApp, but it doesn't confirm an account.
