Add or remove the country code from phone numbers

To add a country code to a phone number, put the code in front and drop any leading trunk 0: UK 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123. To remove it, take the code off and add the 0 back if the country uses one. Paste numbers above, pick a country and Add or Remove, and the whole list is rewritten at once.

What to do

Numbers without a code are read as this country's.

How to add or remove a country code from a list of phone numbers

  1. Paste numbers one per line, or upload a CSV up to 25 MB; the phone column is found and your other columns are kept.
  2. Choose Add or Remove, and the country. For Add, numbers without a code are read as that country's.
  3. Pick the output: with + (+12015550123), without + (12015550123, as some SMS tools and spreadsheets want), or spaced; for Remove, digits only or the national format.
  4. Press the button, check the Note column, and download the CSV with a converted column added.

Example

You enter
Four numbers, (415) 555-0132, 415.555.0145, +44 20 7946 0958 and 555-0100, with Add +1 and the with-+ output chosen.
You get
The first two become +14155550132 and +14155550145, the UK number is left as +442079460958 and noted as another country, and 555-0100 is left unchanged because it can't be read as a full number.
Limits
Uploaded files can be up to 25 MB; there is no cap on the number of rows, and it all runs in your browser.

How do I add a country code to a phone number?

Put the country code in front of the national number, and drop the leading trunk 0 if the country uses one. Many countries write national numbers with a trunk prefix, usually 0, that is dropped in international form. A UK mobile is 07700 900123 at home and +44 7700 900123 abroad, never +4407700900123. The US and Canada have no trunk 0 but sometimes carry a leading 1 that is already the country code.

That's why it isn't just typing +1 in front. The tool parses each number with Google's libphonenumber numbering-plan data, so it knows where the code and trunk prefix go for each country, and 0044 or 001 style prefixes are read as +. Numbers that already have a different country's code keep their own code and are marked, rather than given a second one.

How do I remove the country code from a phone number?

Take the country code off the front, then put the trunk 0 back if the country uses one. Choose Remove and the country above: Digits only gives 2079460958 for +44 20 7946 0958, and National format gives 020 7946 0958, restored the way it's written inside the UK. For the US, +1 201 555 0123 becomes 2015550123 or (201) 555-0123.

Only the chosen country's code comes off. Stripping +44 from a German number would make it look local, so numbers from other countries keep their code and are marked. To find out which countries a mixed list contains first, run it through the phone number country lookup.

Should you use the number with +, without + or in national format?

With + is E.164, the form CRMs, Twilio and most SMS platforms expect; see our E.164 guide. Without + suits spreadsheets that turn a leading + into a formula, and tools such as WhatsApp click-to-chat links that want digits only. National format is for printing or for a dialer that only calls one country.

In Excel, store the column as text before pasting results back, or long numbers turn into scientific notation and lose digits. Our Excel formatting guide shows how. For other formats, including dashes and tel: links, use the phone number formatter.

Does adding a country code make a number valid?

No. Adding a code makes a number dialable from abroad; it doesn't make it a working number. The tool only rewrites digits, and it checks length, not whether the prefix is allocated, so a number with a typo is rewritten too. Use the phone number validator to check the ranges. Nothing here checks that a line is connected, whether it's a mobile that can receive texts, or who carries it now. For those, the landline or mobile checker types numbers from the numbering plan, and a live carrier lookup needs a paid data source.

How do I add or remove a country code in Excel or Google Sheets?

A formula works when every cell is a clean number from one country. Real exports rarely are:

This toolExcel or Sheets formula
Spaces, brackets and dashesHandledEach needs its own SUBSTITUTE
Trunk 0Dropped or restored per countryOne formula per country
Numbers that already have the codeLeft as isGet a second code
Numbers from another countryMarked and left aloneChanged anyway
Leading + and long numbersWritten to the CSV as textExcel can drop the + or show scientific notation

For clean data only: add +1 to a 10-digit US number with ="+1"&A2; add +44 to a UK number that starts with 0 with ="+44"&MID(SUBSTITUTE(A2," ",""),2,20); remove +1 in Google Sheets with =RIGHT(REGEXREPLACE(TO_TEXT(A2),"\D",""),10).

Who uses this tool, and for what?

SMS teams
SMS platforms want every recipient in E.164. Add the country code to a list collected in national form, and check the result with the phone number formatter before upload.
Sales ops
A dialer that only calls one country may want national numbers. Remove the code from that country's numbers and leave the rest marked for a different campaign.
Marketers
Build digits-only numbers for WhatsApp click-to-chat links or tools that reject the +, without hand-editing each row.
Agencies
Clients send numbers with and without codes in the same column. Add the code once, keep every other column, and hand back a CSV that imports cleanly.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • One country per run. In Add mode, every number without a code is read as that country's.
  • It checks a number's length, not whether its prefix is allocated, so a typo is rewritten as well. Validate the result separately.
  • Numbers with another country's code never get the chosen code added or removed; they're marked for you to review.
  • It rewrites digits only. It can't tell you the number is in service, a mobile, or able to receive texts.
  • Excel may reformat the output when you reopen the CSV. Import the column as text.

Common questions

How do I add +1 to a list of phone numbers?
Paste the list above (or upload the CSV), choose Add and United States or Canada, and pick With +. Each 10-digit number becomes +1 followed by its 10 digits, and numbers that already start with +1 or 1 don't get a second code.
How do I remove the country code from phone numbers?
Choose Remove and the country, then pick Digits only or National format. +1 201 555 0123 becomes 2015550123 or (201) 555-0123; +44 20 7946 0958 becomes 2079460958 or 020 7946 0958 with the trunk 0 restored.
How do I remove the country code from a phone number in Excel?
For clean US numbers, =RIGHT(A2,10) keeps the last 10 digits and drops +1. Numbers with spaces, dashes or other countries need more work, so export the column, use Remove here, and paste the converted column back into a column formatted as text.
How do I add a country code in Google Sheets?
Use ="+44"&A2 (or your code) in a new column, after removing any leading 0, then copy and paste as values. Format the column as plain text so Sheets doesn't treat a typed + as the start of a formula.
How do I extract the country code from a phone number?
Paste the numbers into the phone number country lookup, which adds a calling code and country column for each one. A formula can't do it reliably, because country codes are one to three digits long.
Should I keep the 0 when adding a country code?
No. The leading 0 is a trunk prefix used only for calls inside the country. +44 07700 900123 is wrong; +44 7700 900123 is right. The tool drops it for you.
Can I do this in Excel instead?
For one country with clean 10-digit numbers, a formula like ="+1"&A2 works. It breaks on numbers with spaces, brackets, trunk zeros or an existing code, which is why this tool parses each number first.
Are my numbers uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us.

Well formatted is not the same as reachable.

This tool fixes how numbers are written. It cannot tell you whether a line is mobile, landline or VoIP, or which carrier holds it. That takes a live carrier lookup, which is what the Email + Phone plan adds.

  • 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: carrier name and real line type
  • Emails in the same file get a real SMTP mailbox check
