Square customers to email list: subscribers only, unsubscribes set aside

In short: Reads the customer export from the Square Dashboard, sorts each customer by Email Subscription Status (Subscribed, Unknown, Unsubscribed; older files' Email Unsubscribed column too), sets aside unsubscribes, merges repeats and keeps phone, visits, spend and groups. Limit: Receipt-only emails aren't on customer profiles, so they aren't in the export.

To get an email list from Square, export the customer directory from the Square Dashboard (Customers > Customer directory > Export) and upload the CSV here. Customers who unsubscribed are set aside, repeated addresses merge with an unsubscribe on any copy winning, and you download the list with subscription status, visits and total spend per customer.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I check the Square list before a campaign?

  1. Download the email list here.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Import the valid file into Square Marketing or your email platform.

How do I turn a Square customer export into an email list?

  1. In the Square Dashboard, open Customers > Customer directory and choose Export (to export only subscribers, pick the Email subscribers group first).
  2. Upload the CSV or Excel file here, or paste it.
  3. Choose: set aside unsubscribed customers (on to start), or keep only customers marked Subscribed.
  4. Download the email list and the set-aside file with the reason per address.

Example

You enter
A Square customer directory export with 6 customers: 2 Subscribed, 3 Unknown (one with no email) and 1 Unsubscribed.
You get
4 in the email list (the 2 subscribed and 2 Unknown), 1 set aside as Unsubscribed from marketing email, 1 counted as having no address. Ticking subscribed-only moves the 2 Unknown to the set-aside file.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

What does Email Subscription Status mean?

Square marks each customer's email as Subscribed, Unsubscribed or Unknown. Unknown usually means the customer never said either way, for example a profile created at the till or imported without a status. Square's own help describes these values for customer imports, and the export carries the same column.

Unsubscribed customers are set aside by default. Tick "keep only Subscribed" to set Unknown aside too, which is the safer choice for a promotional email. Older exports have an Email Unsubscribed column (TRUE or FALSE) instead, and it is read the same way.

Why are some customers missing an email address?

Many Square profiles are created from a card payment or a phone number, with no email. And an address a customer types only to get a receipt isn't stored on their profile, according to Square's community answers, so it isn't in the export. Those rows are counted as having no address.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Salons and studios
Move a Square customer directory into Mailchimp or Klaviyo with subscription status kept.
Retail shops
Build a list of top spenders from the visits and total spend columns for a VIP offer.
Agencies

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Receipt-only emails aren't on customer profiles, so they aren't in the export.
  • Unknown is not consent; check the rules where your customers are before mailing them.
  • Column names can change between Square export versions; columns are found by name, so check the notes above the result.
  • It can't tell which addresses still have a working inbox.

Common questions

Can I export only email subscribers from Square?
Yes: in the customer directory, open the Email subscribers group and export that. Or export everyone and let this tool sort by Email Subscription Status.
Does it work with other point-of-sale exports?
Any customer CSV with an Email or Email Address column works. A subscription or marketing status column is read when there is one.
Are repeated customers merged?
Yes, one row per address. Visits and spend are added up, groups combined, and an unsubscribe on any copy wins.
Is my customer list uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
