Spam Likely number checker: why your business number is labelled, and what to fix

In short: A checklist, not a reputation lookup: reads the number's type from the numbering plan and turns your answers (calls a day, answer rate, short calls, registration, STIR/SHAKEN attestation, new number) into the triggers carriers and the FCC describe, each with the fix, plus the free registration links. Limit: It has no carrier reputation data and can't read your number's current label.

A number shows as Spam Likely when a carrier's analytics engine (Hiya for AT&T, First Orion for T-Mobile, TNS for Verizon) scores its calls as unwanted: high volume, low answer rates, short calls, complaints or weak STIR/SHAKEN signing. This checker has no access to those scores; it turns your calling numbers into the likely triggers and the fix for each, starting with free registration.

Price: this tool is free. Live line type and carrier lookups come with Pro + Phone at $49.99/mo; email checking is from $9/mo. See pricing

Dead and wrong numbers drag your answer rate down

  1. Every call to a disconnected, wrong or landline-only number counts as unanswered in the engines' eyes.
  2. Upload the call list at /verify with Pro + Phone for a live line type and carrier on each number, and drop the ones that can't answer.

How do I stop my number showing as Spam Likely?

  1. Enter the business number that shows the label and its country.
  2. Add what you know: outbound calls a day, the share answered, the share of answered calls under 30 seconds, registration and STIR/SHAKEN attestation.
  3. Press Check what triggers the label and work down the list: each item says what it means and what to change.
  4. Register the number at the Free Caller Registry, fix the volume and list issues, then check the caller ID on each carrier again.

Example

You enter
(512) 555-2671, United States, 150 calls a day, 12% answered, 40% of answered calls under 30 seconds, not registered, attestation B.
You get
4 things to fix or check: not registered (register at the Free Caller Registry), STIR/SHAKEN B (place calls through the number's own provider), 150 calls a day over the 100-a-day rule of thumb (spread over more numbers), and a 12% answer rate (clean the list). Plus how to see the label on each carrier.
Limits
Runs in your browser; it has no carrier reputation data.

Who decides that a number is Spam Likely?

Not one database. Each US carrier licenses an analytics engine that scores calls as they happen: AT&T uses Hiya, T-Mobile uses First Orion and Verizon uses TNS. They weigh call volume, how many calls are answered and how long they last, complaints from people called, and the STIR/SHAKEN attestation your provider signs the call with. The scores are private, which is why no free tool can tell you your number's current label.

What you can do is register the number with all three at once through the Free Caller Registry, and change the habits that trigger the label.

How many calls a day can one number make?

No carrier publishes a limit. Our rule of thumb is under 100 outbound calls a day per number, ramped up slowly on a new number; teams calling more spread the volume across several local numbers. Volume matters less than how calls end: many unanswered calls and hang-ups in the first seconds read as unwanted calling.

Cleaning the list helps the answer rate directly: every disconnected or wrong number is a call nobody answers. The TCPA calling hours and do-not-call rules apply on top.

Common triggers and what to do

TriggerFix
Not registeredRegister at the Free Caller Registry with business name and call reason
Attestation B or CPlace calls through the provider that owns the number
High volume from one numberSpread over more numbers; ramp new ones slowly
Low answer rateClean the list; call in local hours; drop numbers that never answer
Short callsSay who you are and why in the first seconds

Who uses this tool, and for what?

SDR teams
Work out why connect rates dropped and which of your outbound numbers to rest, register or replace.
Home service businesses
Fix the label on the number you call customers back from, so callbacks get answered.
Clinics
Register the reminder line before patients stop picking up its calls.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • It has no carrier reputation data and can't read your number's current label.
  • The 100-calls-a-day line is our rule of thumb, not a carrier limit.
  • Registration and attestation advice is for US carriers; other countries handle labels differently.
  • The checklist can only be as good as the numbers you enter.

Common questions

Why does my number show up as Spam Likely?
A carrier's analytics engine scored your calls as unwanted, usually from volume, low answer rates, short calls, complaints or unsigned calls. A recycled number can also carry a label from its previous owner.
Can this tool see my number's label?
No. The engines' scores are private. Call a phone on each major carrier and look at the caller ID to see the label people get.
How do I remove the Spam Likely label for free?
Register the number at the Free Caller Registry, which passes it to Hiya, First Orion and TNS, and dispute the label with each engine if it stays. Changing calling habits stops it coming back.
Is my number sent anywhere?
No. The number and your answers are read in your browser.
