What is CNAM?
Also called: Caller ID name, caller name lookup
CNAM, short for Caller ID Name, is the name shown alongside an incoming call in the US and Canada. It is not carried with the call: the receiving carrier looks it up in a CNAM database using the calling number. Names are limited to 15 characters and are only as accurate as the database entry.
The calling party's carrier stores the name, and terminating carriers query it for each call, often through third-party databases with their own caches. That is why the same number can show different names on different networks, or none at all.
For outbound callers, a registered and accurate CNAM makes calls less likely to be ignored. Mobile carriers also show their own spam labels, which come from separate analytics, not from CNAM.
A CNAM lookup on someone else's number tells you the name registered to it, if any. It does not confirm who answers that phone.
How SimpleVerifier handles it
SimpleVerifier does not return caller ID names. Phone checks return format, country, carrier and line type only.
