Nudge for a user who signed up but never started

The email
Hi {{first_name}},
You signed up for {{product}} on {{date}} but haven't {{first_action}} yet. That's the first step, and it takes about five minutes:
1. {{step_1}}
2. {{step_2}}
3. {{step_3}}
Start here: {{link}}
If you signed up by accident or it isn't for you, you can delete your account or stop these emails here: {{settings_link}}. No hard feelings.
{{your_name}}Highlighted {{placeholders}} are the parts to replace. If you cannot fill one with something true and specific, cut the sentence rather than leaving it generic.
When to use it
Send it once, a week or two after signup, to users who never completed the first action. It is the step before a sunset: if they do not respond to this either, stop emailing them.
Only claim a time like "five minutes" if you have checked it yourself on a fresh account.
Why it works
- It is one step, not a feature tour. A new user needs the next action, not the whole product.
- Numbered steps make the effort visible and smaller than they imagined.
- The exit is part of the email. Users who leave cleanly do not mark you as spam, and spam complaints hurt everyone else's delivery.
Before you send
A good share of never-active signups simply have bad addresses: typos, throwaway inboxes, bots. Check the segment with the free list check before sending, and remove anything invalid so it does not count against you as a bounce.
