Breakup email offering to check back later

A final email for prospects whose silence might be about timing: budget cycles, a busy season, or a project that has not started yet. It asks for a month, not a meeting.

Subject line options

  • Better to talk in {{month}}?
  • Timing on {{topic}}

The email

Hi {{first_name}},

I haven't heard back about {{topic}}, so I'll stop here.

One question before I go: is this a "no" or a "not yet"? If it's timing, reply with a month and I'll get back in touch then, and not before.

If it's a no, no reply needed. Thanks for your time either way.

{{your_name}}

Highlighted {{placeholders}} are the parts to replace. If you cannot fill one with something true and specific, cut the sentence rather than leaving it generic.

When to use it

Use it when there is a plausible timing reason for silence: the company just raised money, has a seasonal peak, or posted that a project is planned for next quarter. It is the breakup email for "maybe later" prospects.

If someone replies with a month, put it in your calendar and write on that date, referring to their reply. Missing a date someone gave you undoes the whole point.

Why it works

  • "No or not yet" is easy to answer. One word, and either answer is useful.
  • The reader controls the timing. Asking them to name the month respects their calendar more than a generic "I'll check back in three months".
  • It is short. Four lines is about right for a last email. Anything longer reads as one more pitch.

Before you send

If a prospect asks you to come back in six months, verify the address again before you do. People move on, and a mailbox that worked in spring may bounce in autumn. The free email checker takes a few seconds.

Verify your list before you send

The best template still bounces off an address that does not exist, and a high bounce rate is the quickest way to get a sending domain throttled. The free list check shows how much of a CSV would bounce, without uploading the file.
