Unsubscribe deadline calculator: the last day to honor each opt-out

In short: Turns unsubscribe request dates into deadlines: 10 business days under CAN-SPAM and CASL, 2 days for Gmail and Yahoo bulk senders, at once for a GDPR objection. Flags overdue and late requests and downloads the addresses as a suppression list. Limit: It works out dates from the rule you pick; it isn't legal advice and doesn't decide which law applies to you.

You have 10 business days to honor an unsubscribe under the US CAN-SPAM Act and Canada's CASL, and Gmail and Yahoo expect bulk senders to process one within 2 days. Under GDPR, marketing stops once someone objects. Enter one request date or a list of addresses and dates to get each deadline, the overdue ones and a suppression file.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

Suppress the opt-outs, then check the rest of the list

  1. Download the suppression list and load it into every tool that sends to the list.
  2. Upload the remaining send list at /verify for a live mailbox check, so the next campaign doesn't bounce on closed inboxes.
  3. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.

How do I work out the deadline for an unsubscribe request?

  1. Paste one request date, or a list of email and request date, one per line. Add a third column with the day each was processed to audit past requests.
  2. Pick the rule: CAN-SPAM, CASL, Gmail and Yahoo bulk sender rules, or a GDPR objection to direct marketing.
  3. Choose the as-of day (today by default), and whether US federal holidays count as non-business days.
  4. Press Work out the deadlines. Download the deadlines and the addresses as a suppression list for every tool you send from.

Example

You enter
Five unsubscribe requests under CAN-SPAM, checked as of 6 Nov 2026 with US federal holidays skipped: requested 19 Oct (processed 21 Oct), 20 Oct, 30 Oct, 4 Nov, and 28 Sep (processed 15 Oct).
You get
Deadlines 2 Nov, 3 Nov, 16 Nov and 19 Nov (Veterans Day, 11 November, is skipped) and 13 Oct (Columbus Day skipped). 19 Oct processed in time; 20 Oct overdue; 30 Oct and 4 Nov open; 28 Sep processed late. The 5 addresses download as a suppression list.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How long do you have to honor an unsubscribe request?

10 business days in the US and Canada. The CAN-SPAM Act makes it unlawful to send commercial email to someone more than 10 business days after they opt out, and the FTC's compliance guide says the same; your opt-out also has to keep working for at least 30 days after a send. CASL section 11(3) asks for the unsubscribe to take effect without delay, and in any event within 10 business days.

Mailbox providers ask for less time. Google's sender guidelines ask senders of 5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail to support one-click unsubscribe and process requests within 2 days, and Yahoo sets the same 2 days for bulk senders. In practice most platforms suppress at once, and the deadline matters most for lists you export, import or send from more than one tool.

What does GDPR say about unsubscribes?

GDPR Article 21(3) says that when someone objects to processing for direct marketing, their personal data can no longer be processed for that purpose. It sets no grace period, so the calculator puts the deadline on the day the objection arrives. Article 12(3) separately gives one month to respond to the person's request.

Keep the address on a suppression list rather than deleting it; without it, the address can come back with the next import. The suppression list guide covers keeping one across tools.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • It works out dates from the rule you pick; it isn't legal advice and doesn't decide which law applies to you.
  • Canadian, provincial and other countries' public holidays aren't skipped; only weekends and, optionally, US federal holidays.
  • It can't see whether an address was really suppressed in your sending tools, only the processed date you give it.

Common questions

How many days do you have to honor an unsubscribe under CAN-SPAM?
10 business days from the request. After that, sending that person commercial email breaks the law.
How long does Gmail give you to process an unsubscribe?
Google asks bulk senders, those sending 5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail accounts, to process unsubscribe requests within 2 days and to support one-click unsubscribe.
Do weekends count as business days?
No. The calculator skips Saturdays and Sundays, and US federal holidays when you tick the option. Canadian and provincial holidays aren't included.
How long does the unsubscribe link have to keep working?
Under CAN-SPAM, the opt-out in a message has to be able to take requests for at least 30 days after you send it, according to the FTC.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The dates and addresses stay in your browser.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
