Slack members to email list: deactivated accounts, guests and bots sorted out

In short: Reads Slack's Export member list CSV (status, billing-active, userid, fullname), a Microsoft Teams member list or a Google Groups export. Each member is sorted into owner, admin, member, guest or bot, deactivated accounts and bots are set aside, and guests can be split out. Limit: Slack only lets owners and admins export the member list.

To get member emails from Slack, a workspace owner or admin opens Admin > Manage members and chooses Export member list, then uploads the CSV here. Each member gets a role from the status column (owner, admin, member, guest), deactivated accounts and bots are set aside, and repeats from several workspaces merge into one row.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I turn a Slack member export into an email list?

  1. In Slack, an owner or admin opens the workspace menu, then Tools & settings > Manage members, and chooses Export member list. For Microsoft Teams, export the team's members from the Teams admin center; for Google Groups, open Members and choose Export.
  2. Upload the CSV or Excel file here, or paste it. Several member lists pasted one under another are merged.
  3. Choose: set aside deactivated accounts, set aside guests, set aside owners and admins.
  4. Download the member list and the set-aside file with the reason per address.

Example

You enter
A Slack member export with 7 accounts: the primary owner, 2 members, 1 deactivated account, a multi-channel and a single-channel guest, and a bot with no email.
You get
5 members in the list (owner, 2 members and 2 guests marked guest); the deactivated account set aside as Deactivated account; the bot counted as having no address.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How do I export a member list from Slack?

Workspace owners and admins can download the member list from Manage members (Export member list). The CSV has one row per account with email, status, billing-active, userid, fullname and displayname. The status column says Member, Workspace Admin, Workspace Owner, Multi-Channel Guest, Single-Channel Guest, Deactivated or Bot.

The tool reads that column for the role, sets aside deactivated accounts and bots, and keeps a column per member saying whether the account is active, so the list you mail is the people still in the workspace.

Why are deactivated members set aside?

A Slack account is usually deactivated when someone leaves the company or the community. If they joined with a work address, that inbox is often closed soon after, and mail to it bounces. Untick the option if you want to write to former members anyway; they stay marked active: no.

Can I get member emails from Discord?

No. Discord doesn't show members' email addresses to server owners, so there is nothing to export. Communities that need email ask for it in a signup form or an onboarding bot. If you collected them in a form, the form responses tool builds the list.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Slack only lets owners and admins export the member list.
  • Members who hide their email, and most bots, have no address in the export.
  • Discord doesn't share member emails, so it can't be read here.
  • It can't tell which addresses still have a working inbox.

Common questions

Who can export a Slack member list?
Workspace owners and admins, from Manage members. Members without admin rights can't download it.
Does it work with Microsoft Teams and Google Groups?
Yes. Any member list with an email (or UPN) column works; role and status columns are read when they're there.
Are guests included?
Yes by default, marked as guest. Tick the option to put multi-channel, single-channel and external guests in the set-aside file instead.
Can I send a newsletter to my Slack members?
Joining a workspace isn't agreement to marketing email. Use the list for messages about the community, or ask members to opt in first.
Is my member list uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you choose to check the addresses afterwards.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
