Business email checker: split free and company email addresses

A business email address is on a domain the company owns, like jane@acme.com. A free one is on a mailbox provider anyone can sign up to, like gmail.com, outlook.com or yahoo.com. Paste a list or upload a CSV above and this checker splits the two using 158 free webmail and ISP domains, so you can download the company addresses alone.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How do I remove free email addresses from a list?

  1. Paste one address per line, or upload a CSV. The email column is found automatically and your other columns are kept. Files can be up to 25 MB.
  2. Press Split free and company emails.
  3. Check the top domains. A company domain you know is personal, such as a family domain, can be removed by hand.
  4. Download company addresses only, free addresses only, or everything with a mailbox type column.

Example

You enter
Three addresses: jane@acme.example, sam@gmail.com and bob@comcast.net.
You get
1 of 3 is a company domain (jane@acme.example); sam@gmail.com is labelled personal webmail and bob@comcast.net internet provider mail.
Limits
Matched against a domain list with no DNS lookups. Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How do I check if an email is a business email?

Look at the domain after the @. If it is a public mailbox provider anyone can sign up to, such as gmail.com, outlook.com or yahoo.com, it is a free address. If it is a domain the organisation owns, such as acme.com, it is a business email address. For a whole list, paste it above and the checker sorts every row into company, personal webmail or internet provider.

A business domain can be hosted by Google or Microsoft and still be a business address: a company on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 sends from its own domain. To see who hosts a company domain's mail, use the email provider lookup.

Why split free and company email addresses?

Because a company address tells you who the person works for and reaches them at work, which matters for B2B outreach and lead scoring. A Gmail address on a demo request could be a real buyer using a personal account, or a student, or a competitor. Most sales teams don't throw free addresses away. They route them differently, asking for a company name or giving them a lower lead score.

The split also matters for deliverability. A list that's mostly Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo is judged by those providers' bulk sender rules (Google, Yahoo). A list that's mostly company domains lands on Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and corporate gateways, which behave differently. Our guide to business email vs personal email covers when each one is the right contact.

What counts as a free email domain?

A free email domain is one where anyone can open a personal mailbox, and the checker uses 158 domains in two groups. Personal webmail covers Gmail, Outlook.com and Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL, iCloud, Proton, Zoho Mail, GMX and web.de, Yandex, Mail.ru, QQ, Naver and their regional versions. It also includes paid personal services like Fastmail, because they're personal addresses rather than company ones. Internet-provider addresses, such as comcast.net, att.net, btinternet.com and orange.fr, are a separate group. They're only open to the ISP's customers, but they're still personal.

It's built on our reference list of free email providers, where each domain was checked for live MX records in October 2026, with the dataset as a CSV download. Matching is on the exact domain, so acme.gmail.com lookalikes or typo domains like gmial.com are counted as company domains. Run the list through the email list cleaner first to catch typos.

What can't a business email checker tell you?

It can't tell you the business is real or the mailbox is live: a company domain isn't proof of a business. Anyone can register a domain for a personal address, and a one-person company's domain looks the same as a large one's. And a company address can belong to someone who left last year: B2B contact data decays as people change jobs, and the mailbox is usually deleted soon after.

Company domains also carry a risk free ones don't: many are catch-all, accepting mail for any address, real or not. What is a catch-all domain? explains the setting. A mailbox check flags those, so you know which "valid" results to treat with care.

Is this faster than a formula in Excel?

A formula can do it if you maintain the list of free domains yourself:

This toolExcel formula
List of free domains158 included, with regional variantsYou build and maintain it
ISP addresses as a separate groupYesOnly if your list marks them
Rows that aren't addressesCounted as "Not an address"Labelled "company" unless you add a check
OutputCompany-only, free-only or labelled CSVA label column to filter

The formula, with free domains in a range named FreeDomains: =IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(LOWER(TEXTAFTER(A2,"@")),FreeDomains,0)),"free","company").

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Sales ops
Split inbound leads into company and free addresses, so company leads go straight to sales and Gmail sign-ups get asked for a company name first.
SaaS signups
Find out how many trial users signed up with a work address, and which company domains have several users already.
Cold emailers
Keep only company addresses for a B2B sequence, then verify them, paying attention to catch-all domains.
Marketers
Segment a newsletter list by Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo versus company domains to watch deliverability for each group separately.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Matching is on the exact domain against 158 listed domains. A small regional provider that isn't listed is counted as a company domain.
  • A personal custom domain, like a family name domain, looks the same as a company one.
  • Typo domains such as gmial.com count as company domains; fix them first with the typo corrector.
  • It expects one address per cell or line. Cells like Jane Doe <jane@acme.com> are counted as not an address; split them with the email list cleaner first.
  • It doesn't check that the company domain receives mail or that the mailbox exists.

Common questions

How do I check if an email is a business email?
Check the domain after the @. A public provider such as gmail.com, outlook.com or yahoo.com means a free personal address; a domain the organisation owns, such as acme.com, means a business address. Paste a list above to sort every row at once.
How do I remove Gmail and Yahoo addresses from an email list?
Paste the list or upload the CSV above, press Split free and company emails, then download "company only". Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud and the other free and ISP domains are removed, and every original CSV column is kept for the rows that remain.
What is a business email address?
An address on a domain owned by the organisation, such as jane@acme.com, usually hosted on Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or the company's own mail server. A free address is on a public provider anyone can sign up to, such as gmail.com or outlook.com.
What should a business email address look like?
A name at the company's own domain, such as jane@acme.com or jane.doe@acme.com. Our guide to professional email formats covers the common patterns companies use.
Is Gmail good for business email?
A gmail.com address works, but recipients and B2B lead filters read it as personal. Google Workspace runs Gmail on your own domain, so you keep the Gmail interface with an address like jane@yourcompany.com.
Where can I get a list of free email domains?
The free email providers list has every domain this checker uses, searchable and downloadable as CSV, JSON or TXT, grouped into personal webmail and internet providers.
Is outlook.com a business email?
No. outlook.com, hotmail.com and live.com addresses are Microsoft's free personal accounts. A company using Microsoft 365 has addresses on its own domain, like jane@acme.com, even though Microsoft hosts the mail.
Are ISP addresses like comcast.net free emails?
They're personal, not business, so they're grouped with free mail here. You can only get one as the ISP's customer, which is why the tool shows them as a separate group in case you want to treat them differently.
Does a company domain mean the address is valid?
No. It only tells you the domain isn't a public mailbox provider. Whether the mailbox exists, and whether the domain accepts every address, needs a mailbox check, which this free tool doesn't do.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
