Free Email Provider Domains: A Reference List of 79, Checked

··6 min read

Free email provider domains are consumer mailbox domains, such as gmail.com, outlook.com and yahoo.com, that identify a person rather than a company. Below are 79 of them, global and regional, each with its MX record looked up on 2 October 2026. All 79 were live, and the MX data shows who really hosts them.

If you qualify B2B leads, score signups or segment a list, this is the set of domains to treat as personal rather than corporate.

How this list was built

We started from the well-known global and regional consumer providers and then checked every domain in DNS. No domain is included on reputation alone: each one returned a live MX record when we queried it with dnspython against public resolvers at about 04:00 UTC on 2 October 2026.

We also checked each domain against our own 8,740-domain disposable list. None appear on it. That matters, because flagging gmail.com as a throwaway domain would block real people; our verifier also excludes a set of known real mail providers from the disposable list for exactly that reason.

The list is deliberately not exhaustive. It covers the domains you are most likely to meet in English-language, European and East Asian B2B data. Regional ISPs and small providers number in the thousands.

Global webmail providers

Four operators account for most personal addresses in English-language B2B data: Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Apple. Here is what each domain's MX record pointed to.

Domain Primary MX host (2 Oct 2026) Operator
gmail.com, googlemail.com gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com Google
outlook.com outlook-com.olc.protection.outlook.com Microsoft
hotmail.com hotmail-com.olc.protection.outlook.com Microsoft
live.com live-com.olc.protection.outlook.com Microsoft
msn.com msn-com.olc.protection.outlook.com Microsoft
hotmail.co.uk, hotmail.fr, live.co.uk eur.olc.protection.outlook.com Microsoft
yahoo.com, ymail.com, rocketmail.com mta5.am0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.fr mx-eu.mail.am0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
aol.com mx-aol.mail.gm0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
icloud.com, me.com, mac.com mx01.mail.icloud.com Apple
yahoo.co.jp mx1.mail.yahoo.co.jp Yahoo Japan (separate infrastructure)

Two details worth knowing. yahoo.co.jp does not use Yahoo's global mail servers; it runs its own, because Yahoo Japan is a separate business. And googlemail.com still receives mail, at the same servers as gmail.com, so treat the two as one provider when you deduplicate.

Privacy-focused and independent providers

Domain Primary MX host Notes
proton.me, protonmail.com, pm.me mail.protonmail.ch Three domains, one mailbox provider

Proton's three domains matter for deduplication: the same person can appear as name@proton.me and name@protonmail.com.

Regional providers

Outside the US and UK, the dominant personal domain is often a local provider, not Gmail. If your list has a regional skew, these will show up.

Region Domains Notes from MX
Russia yandex.ru, yandex.com, ya.ru, mail.ru, bk.ru, inbox.ru, list.ru, rambler.ru Yandex's three domains share mx.yandex.ru; Mail.ru's four share mxs.mail.ru
China qq.com, foxmail.com, 163.com, 126.com, yeah.net, sina.com foxmail.com uses the same MX as qq.com; 163, 126 and yeah.net are all on NetEase's mxmail.netease.com
South Korea naver.com, hanmail.net, daum.net daum.net's MX is mx1.hanmail.net
India rediffmail.com
Italy libero.it, virgilio.it
France orange.fr, wanadoo.fr, free.fr, laposte.net, sfr.fr wanadoo.fr's MX is smtp-in.orange.fr

ISP domains: the mailbox has moved, the domain has not

Several big ISP email domains are now received by someone else's servers. This is the most interesting thing the MX data shows.

ISP domain Primary MX host Mail actually received by
att.net, sbcglobal.net mx-att.mail.am0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
verizon.net mx-aol.mail.gm0.yahoodns.net Yahoo (the same MX host as aol.com)
cox.net mta5.am0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
rogers.com mx-rogers.mail.am0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
sky.com mx-eu.mail.am0.yahoodns.net Yahoo
btinternet.com mx.bt.prod.cloud.openwave.ai Openwave cloud
virginmedia.com mx-10.eu-west.atmailcloud.com Atmail cloud
optusnet.com.au mx-10.au-east.atmailcloud.com Atmail cloud
shaw.ca shw-central.mx.a.cloudfilter.net Cloudfilter
comcast.net mx1.mxge.comcast.net Comcast's own
bigpond.com extmail.bigpond.com Telstra's own

The operator column is read from the MX hostname, so treat it as an inference for the non-Yahoo rows.

Why it matters: verification and deliverability behaviour follow the MX host, not the domain. An att.net address is filtered by Yahoo's systems and answers verification the way Yahoo does. If you segment results by provider, group these with Yahoo, not with "other ISP". Our post on why Yahoo addresses are hard to verify explains what that means in practice.

How to use the list

Use it to label, not to reject.

  • Lead scoring. A personal address on a B2B form is a weaker signal than a company domain, but it is not a fake one. Many founders, freelancers and small-business owners only have Gmail.
  • Signup forms. Rejecting free email domains turns away real customers. If you want company information, ask for the company name. To stop throwaway addresses, block disposable domains instead; that is a different, much smaller problem.
  • Enrichment. You cannot find a company from @gmail.com. Route personal addresses away from domain-based enrichment so you do not waste lookups.
  • Deduplication. Collapse provider aliases before deduplicating: googlemail.com with gmail.com; proton.me, protonmail.com and pm.me together; and, depending on your rules, Gmail's dots and plus-addresses. See our post on plus addressing and Gmail dots.
  • Verification. Personal domains are verified the same way as company domains, by asking the mail server. The free email verifier handles both.

What this list does not tell you

  • Whether sign-up is free today. We verified that each domain receives mail, not what each provider charges. Some, like ISP domains, are available only to customers, and some independent providers are paid services.
  • Every regional provider. There are far more than 79. The list covers the ones you are most likely to meet in B2B data.
  • Business use. Some small businesses use a personal domain as their main address. The domain tells you the mailbox is personal; it does not tell you the person is not a buyer.

The short version

  • 79 consumer email domains, all with live MX records on 2 October 2026, none on our disposable list.
  • Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Apple cover most personal addresses in English-language data; Yandex, Mail.ru, QQ, NetEase and Naver lead regionally.
  • att.net, sbcglobal.net, verizon.net, cox.net, rogers.com and sky.com mail is received by Yahoo, so treat it that way.
  • Label personal addresses; block disposable ones. They are different lists.

To check where any domain's mail goes, use the MX lookup tool.

Common questions

What counts as a free email domain?

In B2B use it means a consumer mailbox domain that anyone can get an address on, not one tied to a company: gmail.com, outlook.com, yahoo.com and their regional equivalents. Some, like ISP domains such as comcast.net, are only available to customers, but they are still personal addresses rather than business ones.

Should I block free email addresses on my signup form?

Usually not outright. Many genuine buyers, freelancers and small-business owners use Gmail or Outlook.com. A common approach is to accept them but route them differently, for example asking for a company name or treating them as lower-priority leads, rather than rejecting real people at the door.

Are free email domains the same as disposable email domains?

No. A free provider such as Gmail gives a permanent personal mailbox; a disposable service gives an address meant to be abandoned. We checked all 79 domains on this list against our 8,740-domain disposable blocklist and none appear on it. Treating a real provider as disposable would block legitimate users.

Why do att.net and verizon.net addresses go to Yahoo?

Because their MX records point at Yahoo's mail infrastructure. When we looked them up in October 2026, att.net, sbcglobal.net, verizon.net, cox.net, rogers.com and sky.com all had MX hosts under yahoodns.net. The addresses keep their original domain, but Yahoo's servers receive the mail.
