Excel phone number validator: check every number in a spreadsheet

In short: Finds the phone column of an .xlsx, .ods or CSV, checks each number against its country's numbering plan, repairs cells where Excel dropped the + or a leading 0 (and says so), and adds phone_valid, phone_e164, phone_country, phone_type and phone_status. Downloads as .xlsx with phones stored as text. Limit: It checks format and allocation, not whether a line is connected or whose it is.

To validate phone numbers in Excel without formulas, upload the workbook here: the phone column is found, each number is checked against its country's numbering plan, and five columns are added (valid, E.164, country, type, status). Numbers Excel stored without their + or leading 0 are repaired and marked. You download an .xlsx that keeps the + and zeros.

Price: this tool is free. Live line type and carrier lookups come with Pro + Phone at $49.99/mo; email checking is from $9/mo. See pricing

Valid format is step one. Is the line still live?

  1. Filter the downloaded sheet on phone_valid = TRUE to drop the numbers that can't exist.
  2. Upload the sheet at /verify with Pro + Phone for a live line type and carrier on each number; email columns in the same file get a mailbox check.
  3. Use phone_e164 as the column you import into a CRM, dialer or SMS tool.

How do I validate phone numbers in an Excel spreadsheet?

  1. Save or export the sheet as .xlsx (or CSV), with a header row; the first sheet with data is read.
  2. Upload it and pick the default country for numbers written without a + country code.
  3. Press Validate the numbers. Read the counts: valid, invalid, mobile ranges and cells repaired after Excel dropped a + or leading 0.
  4. Download the .xlsx (phone columns stored as text, so Excel keeps them) or a CSV, with your columns first and the five check columns at the end.

Example

You enter
A sheet with name and phone: (415) 555-2671, 4155552671, 447400123456, +44 20 7946 0958, 12345 and +1 800 555 0199, default country United States.
You get
5 valid, 1 invalid (12345, wrong length). 447400123456 is valid as +447400123456 after putting back the + Excel dropped, marked in phone_status. Types: two US numbers mobile or landline, UK mobile, UK landline, US toll-free. Download as .xlsx with phones stored as text.
Limits
Runs in your browser; .xlsx, .xlsm, .ods or CSV up to 25 MB, first sheet with data.

Why not validate phone numbers with an Excel formula?

A formula such as =AND(LEN(A2)=10, ISNUMBER(--A2)) only counts digits. It passes (999) 999-9999, fails every international number, and knows nothing about which prefixes a country has allocated. Each country's plan has its own lengths and ranges; this tool reads them from Google's libphonenumber, the library Android uses.

Excel also damages numbers before any formula runs: it reads +447400123456 as the number 447400123456 and 07400 123456 as 7400123456. A cell that fails as written is tried again with the + put back, then with the leading 0, and phone_status says which repair made it valid. See how to validate phone numbers in Excel for the formula route.

What do the five added columns contain?

phone_valid is TRUE or FALSE. phone_e164 is the number as + and digits, the format CRMs, dialers and SMS tools import. phone_country is the ISO code, such as US or GB. phone_type is the range type: mobile, landline, mobile or landline (US and Canada), toll-free, VoIP or another service. phone_status says why a number failed (wrong length, prefix not allocated) or how it was repaired.

In the .xlsx download these columns and your original phone column are stored as text, so opening the file never strips a + or a zero again.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Sales ops
Validate the phone column of a CRM export in Excel and import phone_e164 back, without writing a formula per country.
Event teams
Check a registration sheet's mobile numbers before sending reminders by SMS.
Recruiters
Fix candidate numbers that Excel stripped of their + or leading zero, with each repair marked.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • It checks format and allocation, not whether a line is connected or whose it is.
  • US and Canadian numbers can't be split into mobile and landline from the digits.
  • Only the first sheet with data is read; one phone column per run.
  • A repaired cell is a best reading of what Excel dropped; the status column marks it for a look.

Common questions

Which files can I upload?
An .xlsx, .xlsm or .ods workbook (the first sheet with data is read), or a CSV, TXT or TSV, up to 25 MB. Old .xls files need saving as .xlsx first.
How do I validate US phone numbers in Excel?
Pick United States as the default country and upload the sheet. Ten-digit numbers and +1 numbers are checked against NANP area codes and prefixes; the type column says mobile or landline can't be told from US digits.
Will it change my original column?
No. Your columns are copied as they are and the five check columns are added at the end.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The workbook is read and written in your browser.

Well formatted is not the same as reachable.

This tool fixes how numbers are written. It cannot tell you whether a line is mobile, landline or VoIP, or which carrier holds it. That takes a live carrier lookup, which is what Pro + Phone ($49.99/mo) adds.

  • Upload a CSV up to 100,000 rows with an email or phone column
  • 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: carrier name and real line type
  • Emails in the same file get a real SMTP mailbox check
