Count unique values in a CSV column, with how often each appears

In short: Distinct count, frequency and share per value for any column, most frequent first; case-insensitive by default with spaces ignored; optional split of multi-value cells on ; , | or line breaks; blank count; case-only variants flagged. Downloads the counts and the distinct list. Limit: Values are compared as text after trimming: 1,000 and 1000 count as different values.

Upload the CSV, pick a column, and the tool lists every distinct value with how many rows have it and its share, most frequent first, plus the distinct count, blanks and values that appear only once. Case and stray spaces are ignored unless you switch that off, and tag cells such as vip; trial can be split before counting.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

How do I count only the contacts that are reachable?

  1. Download the file you counted, or the rows behind the value you care about.
  2. Upload it at /verify. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
  3. Count the valid file again to see what each source or segment is really worth.

How do I count distinct values in a CSV column?

  1. Paste or upload the CSV and press Count values.
  2. Pick the column. A lead source, status, country, tag or company column is picked first if there is one.
  3. If a cell can hold several values, choose the separator so each one is counted on its own.
  4. Download the counts as CSV, or the distinct values as a plain list.

Example

You enter
A 7-row CSV with email, company, lead_source and tags columns, lead_source spelled Webinar and webinar.
You get
lead_source picked first: 3 distinct values: Webinar 3 (42.9%, both spellings counted together), Vendor list 3 (42.9%), Signup form 1 (14.3%). On the email column: 6 unique addresses, one repeated. Tags split on ; count vip 4, trial 2, renewal 2.
Limits
Runs in your browser with no row cap; an uploaded file can be up to 25 MB.

How is this different from COUNTUNIQUE or a pivot table?

=COUNTA(UNIQUE(B2:B5000)) in Excel 365 or =COUNTUNIQUE(B2:B) in Google Sheets give the distinct count, and a pivot table gives the frequency. Both treat Webinar and webinar (with a trailing space) as different values, which is how a lead-source report ends up with five spellings of the same source. Here spaces at either end are always ignored and case is ignored by default; turn on case-sensitive counting and the spellings that differ only by case are listed so you can fix them with find and replace.

Splitting handles tag-style cells. A tags column with vip; renewal counts once for vip and once for renewal, so the share is of tags, not rows.

What does a repeated value in the email column mean?

A duplicate contact. Picking the email column gives the number of unique addresses and how many appear more than once; remove duplicate emails takes them out, including Gmail dot and plus variants.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Marketing ops
See how many contacts each lead source, list or status holds before deciding what to mail.
Sales ops
Count accounts per company or domain to spot where a list is over-concentrated.
Analysts
Get a quick frequency table out of a large CSV without opening a spreadsheet.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Values are compared as text after trimming: 1,000 and 1000 count as different values.
  • Near-misses beyond case and spacing (Contoso Ltd vs Contoso Limited) aren't merged.
  • Splitting on a comma also splits values that contain one, such as company names.
  • It counts what's in the file, not which addresses would deliver. That needs a mailbox check.

Common questions

Are blank cells counted?
They're counted separately. Tick Count blank cells as a value to list them as (blank) in the table.
Can I count every column at once?
One column at a time here. For blanks and distinct counts across every column, the CSV fill rate checker does that.
Which spelling is shown when case is ignored?
The first one in the file.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's read in your browser.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.

  • Upload the cleaned file as it is: CSVs up to 100,000 rows
  • A real SMTP mailbox check on every row, with catch-all detection
