What each type means for the caller

Toll-free: 0800 or 0808
Free to the caller, usually only from inside the country; the business that owns the number pays for the call. 7, 9 or 10 digits after +44.
Premium rate: 0842–0845, 0870–0873, 090, 091, 0982–0984 or 0989
Charged above a normal call at a rate set by the service, with part of the charge going to the service provider. 7 or 10 digits after +44.
Universal access (UAN): 030, 033, 034, 037 or 055
One national number for a business with several sites, routed to the nearest or chosen office. 10 digits after +44.
Personal number: 070
A follow-me number that forwards to whatever phone its owner chooses, so the digits don't reveal the line behind it. 10 digits after +44.
VoIP: 056
Numbers issued for internet telephony services rather than a fixed line or a mobile network. 10 digits after +44.

Writing and dialling a United Kingdom toll-free number

Inside the United Kingdom, dial the number with its leading 0. From abroad or in E.164, drop the 0 and put +44 in front: 0800 123 4567 becomes +448001234567. Many freephone numbers still only accept calls from inside the United Kingdom, and a call from abroad that does connect is usually charged.

Toll-free and premium numbers in a phone list

In a lead or customer list, a toll-free number usually reaches a company line rather than a person, and a premium-rate number costs you money to call. The free toll-free number checker flags them in a pasted list or CSV, and the United Kingdom phone number format page covers mobiles and landlines.

Next step

A prefix says what a range is for. A live lookup says what the line is now.

Pro + Phone is $49.99 a month (or $499.90 a year): upload a CSV and every number gets a live line-type and carrier lookup, with the emails in the same file checked too.

Common questions

What is the toll-free prefix in the United Kingdom?
United Kingdom toll-free numbers start with 0800 or 0808 at home, written +44 800 or 808 internationally. Every valid toll-free number starts that way, though not every number with those digits is in service.
How many digits is a United Kingdom toll-free number?
7, 9 or 10 digits after the country code +44, plus the trunk prefix 0 when dialled inside the United Kingdom.
Can I call a United Kingdom toll-free number from abroad?
Sometimes. Dial +44 and the number without the leading 0. Many freephone numbers only take calls from inside the United Kingdom, and where they do connect from abroad the call is usually charged.
How do I spot a premium-rate number in the United Kingdom?
By its first digits: 0842–0845, 0870–0873, 090, 091, 0982–0984 or 0989. The prefix tells you the range is charged; the actual price is set per service.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.

In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what Pro + Phone ($49.99/mo) adds.

  • 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: real line type, including US numbers
  • Carrier name for every number looked up
  • Upload a CSV up to 100,000 rows; emails in the same file get a mailbox check
