Google Sheets email verifier: check the emails in your sheet

To verify emails in Google Sheets, copy the cells (Ctrl+C or Cmd+C) and paste them here. The checker reads the tab-separated rows, validates each address, removes duplicates including Gmail dot and +tag variants, flags typo and dead domains and disposable addresses, and checks the first 10 mailboxes live. ISEMAIL in Sheets only checks the format.

Runs in your browser. Only the domains are sent, to look up their mail servers; addresses stay on your device.

How do I verify email addresses in Google Sheets?

  1. In Google Sheets, select the column or the whole table (header row included) and copy it.
  2. Paste it into the box and press Check the sheet. Tabs from Sheets are read as columns, and the email column is found by its contents. You can also upload File > Download > CSV.
  3. Read the flagged rows, each with its reason.
  4. Download the clean list and import it back with File > Import > Upload, or paste the flagged rows into a new tab to fix them.
  5. The first 10 addresses get a live mailbox check. Sign in with Google to check the rest with 100 free email checks.

How do I validate an email address in Google Sheets?

Sheets has a built-in function for the format: ISEMAIL returns TRUE when a value is shaped like an email address. Google's help page is clear that it doesn't check whether the address exists, so nobody@example.com passes. REGEXMATCH does the same job with a pattern you control.

For new entries, Data > Data validation has a "Text is valid email" rule that rejects badly formed input. None of these see the domain's mail server or the mailbox. That's the gap this page fills: paste the sheet and the format check, the mail-server lookup and a live check on 10 mailboxes run in one go. The formula-only routine is in verifying emails in Google Sheets.

How do I check for duplicate emails in Google Sheets?

Data > Data cleanup > Remove duplicates compares cells as text. It won't treat j.doe@gmail.com and jdoe+news@gmail.com as the same person, though Google delivers both to one inbox.

This checker does: every Gmail and googlemail.com address is reduced to its inbox before comparing, and the duplicate row names the row it repeats. If you only need that one step on a Gmail-heavy list, the Gmail address normalizer does it on its own.

Can Google Sheets verify that an email exists?

Not with formulas. Confirming a mailbox needs a DNS lookup and an SMTP conversation with the recipient's server (RFC 5321), and Sheets functions can't open one. Apps Script can call a verification API with UrlFetchApp, which works but needs an API key, quota handling and a trigger.

The paste-in route here needs none of that. For a sheet that fills up every day from a form, an API or an automation is the better fit; see the API docs.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Founders
Check a waitlist or beta sign-up sheet before the launch email, when a bounce spike from a new domain does the most damage.
Teachers and organisers
Validate a class, club or volunteer sheet built from a Google Form before a mail merge.
Sales teams
Check a shared prospect sheet that several people add to by hand, where typos and duplicates pile up.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Pasted cells are read as text; formulas aren't evaluated, so copy the values, not a column that only shows results of other sheets.
  • Very large sheets are easier as File > Download > CSV than as a paste; the browser check covers the first 5,000 rows.
  • Format and domain checks can't show whether a mailbox exists; the mailbox check covers 10 rows without an account.

Common questions

How to validate email in Google Sheets?
Use =ISEMAIL(A2) or Data validation's "Text is valid email" rule for the format. To find which addresses will bounce, copy the cells into an email verifier, which also checks the domain's mail server and the mailbox.
Does ISEMAIL check if an email exists?
No. Google's help page says ISEMAIL only checks that the value is in a valid email format. A made-up address in the right shape returns TRUE.
How to check for duplicate emails in Google Sheets?
Use Data > Data cleanup > Remove duplicates on a lower-cased column. It won't catch Gmail addresses written with different dots or +tags; this checker does.
Can I verify emails in Google Sheets without Apps Script?
Yes. Copy the cells, paste them into this checker and download the clean list. Apps Script with a verification API is only worth it for a sheet that keeps filling up.

A tidy list can still be full of dead addresses.

Extracting, deduplicating and syntax checks all work on the text of an address. None of them can tell whether the mailbox exists. Only the server that hosts it can answer that, through an SMTP check, and that is what the paid product does.
