Click-to-call link generator: tel: and SMS links with HTML
A click-to-call link is an HTML link whose address starts with tel: followed by the number in international format, such as tel:+14155552671; tapping it on a phone opens the dialler. How do I make a click-to-call link?
- Type the phone number in any format and pick the country for numbers written without a + code.
- Choose Call (tel:) or Text (sms:). For a text link, type the message the visitor's phone should pre-fill, if any.
- Optionally set the link text, such as Call us. It defaults to the number in its national format.
- Press Make the link and copy the link or the HTML. For many numbers, switch to A list of numbers and download a CSV.
Example
- You enter
(415) 555-0132, United States, with Text (sms:) chosen and the messageHi, I'd like a quote.- You get
- A
tel:+14155550132call link, ansms:+14155550132?body=…link with the message URL-encoded, and the HTML to paste, with link text defaulting to(415) 555-0132. - Limits
- No limit on single links; the list mode accepts pasted numbers or a CSV up to 25 MB. It runs in your browser.
How do I create a click-to-call link?
Put tel: and the full international number in a link: <a href="tel:+14155552671">(415) 555-2671</a>. The number goes in E.164 form, with a + and the country code and no spaces, which is the global-number format RFC 3966 defines for tel: URIs. A local form like tel:4155552671 can fail when the visitor's phone is in another country.
The text inside the link can be anything; the number in the href is what gets dialled. Extensions go after the number as ;ext=204, also from RFC 3966, though phones and calling apps differ in whether they dial them.
How do I make an SMS link with a pre-filled message?
Use sms: and the number, then ?body= and the message, percent-encoded: sms:+14155552671?body=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20a%20quote. That's the form RFC 5724 specifies. Tapping it opens the messaging app with the number and message filled in; the visitor still presses send and can edit the text first.
The tool encodes the message for you and shows how many SMS segments it will take, using the same GSM-7 and UCS-2 rules as the SMS character counter. For WhatsApp instead of SMS, use the WhatsApp link generator.
How do I add a click-to-call link in an email signature?
Paste the HTML snippet into an HTML signature, or in Gmail and Outlook select the number in the signature editor, add a link and paste the tel: link as the address. An explicit tel: link carries the international form, so it dials correctly from abroad.
In a spreadsheet, the same link works with Excel's HYPERLINK function: =HYPERLINK("tel:+14155552671","Call"). The list mode above builds the tel: and sms: links for a whole column at once.
What is a tel link?
A tel link is a URL with the tel: scheme, which browsers hand to the device's phone app instead of loading a page. MDN's reference for the a element lists tel: alongside mailto: and sms: as schemes a link can use. On a desktop without a calling app, clicking one may do nothing or offer to open a calling app such as Teams or FaceTime.
Because it's just a link, it works in web pages, PDFs, email and most CMS link fields, including WordPress.
tel:, sms: or WhatsApp link: which should I use?
| tel: | sms: | wa.me (WhatsApp) | |

| Opens | Phone dialler | Messaging app | WhatsApp chat |
| Pre-filled text | No | Yes, ?body= | Yes, ?text= |
| Works on desktop | With a calling app | Rarely | With WhatsApp Desktop or Web |
| Standard | RFC 3966 | RFC 5724 | WhatsApp's own |

What can’t this tool tell you?
- It checks the number fits its country's numbering plan; it can't tell you the line is in service or can receive texts.
- sms: links only work where the device has a messaging app, which most desktops don't.
- Phones and apps differ in how they handle extensions after ;ext=.
- The visitor's phone decides what happens; test each link on the devices your audience uses.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.
In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what the Email + Phone plan adds.
- 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: real line type, including US numbers
- Carrier name for every number looked up
