QR code for a phone number: call, text or save a contact (vCard)
A QR code for a phone number holds a tel: link, so scanning it offers to call that number. To make one, enter the number in any format: this generator writes it in international E.164 form and draws the code. It also makes sms: codes with a pre-filled message and vCard codes that save your name, phone and email as a contact.

How do I make a QR code for a phone number?
- Pick what the code should do: Call (tel:), Text (sms:) or Contact (vCard).
- Choose the country for numbers written without a + code, then type the number in any format, such as (415) 555-2671.
- For a text code, add the message that should appear; for a contact, fill in the name, phones, email and anything else you want on the card.
- Press Make QR code, check what the code contains, scan it with your own phone, then download it as PNG or SVG.
Example
- You enter
(415) 555-0132, United States, with Call (tel:) chosen.- You get
- A QR code that holds
tel:+14155550132(version 1, 21 x 21 modules, error correction level M); scanning it offers to call that number. Download as PNG or SVG. - Limits
- No usage limit and no account; it runs in your browser.
Can you make a QR code for a phone number?
Yes: encode the number as a tel: link and any QR code reader treats it as a phone number. The tel: scheme is defined in RFC 3966; a global number is written with a + and the country code, as in tel:+14155552671. Writing the number in that international form matters on a printed code, because the person scanning it may be abroad or on a phone from another country.
The QR code itself stores only text, so it never expires and doesn't depend on any website staying online. This generator draws it in your browser with the open-source node-qrcode library; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How do I make a QR code that sends a text message?
Use an sms: link, which RFC 5724 defines with an optional body field for the message: sms:+14155552671?body=JOIN. Scanning it opens the messaging app with the number and the text filled in, and the person still presses send. It suits keyword opt-ins on posters ("Text JOIN to…"), as long as your consent wording follows your SMS program's rules.
The body has to be percent-encoded, so spaces become %20 and an & becomes %26; the tool does that for you. Keep the message short: every character adds to the code's density.
What is a vCard QR code?
A vCard QR code holds a whole contact card in the vCard format, so scanning it offers to save a new contact with your name, phone numbers, email, company and address. vCard 3.0 is defined in RFC 2426 and 4.0 in RFC 6350. Version 3.0 is the safer choice for print because it is the version phones and contact apps have read the longest; 4.0 writes phone numbers as tel: URIs.
Unlike a hosted "dynamic" QR code, a vCard code made here can't be edited after printing, but it also can't stop working or be redirected: the details are in the code itself. To turn a whole spreadsheet into contacts instead, use the CSV to VCF converter.
How much data can a phone number QR code hold?
A QR code grows from 21 x 21 modules (version 1) up to 177 x 177 (version 40) as you add data, as Denso Wave, the inventor of the QR code, explains. A tel: code needs only a small version; a vCard with an address and a note can need a much larger one, and denser codes need to be printed bigger to scan reliably. The result shows the version and module count, so you can see how dense your code is.
Error correction trades capacity for resilience. Level L restores roughly 7% of a damaged code, M 15%, Q 25% and H 30%, as the node-qrcode documentation lists them. Denso Wave notes that M is the level most often chosen and that Q or H suit codes that will get dirty; pick H if the code will sit on a surface that gets scuffed.
Which QR code type should I use for my number?
| Call (tel:) | Text (sms:) | Contact (vCard) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What scanning does | Offers to call | Opens a text with your message | Offers to save a contact |
| Holds | One number | One number and a message | Name, phones, email, address, note |
| Code density | Low | Low to medium | Medium to high |
| Best for | Shops, vans, signs | Keyword opt-ins | Business cards, badges |
Who uses this tool, and for what?
- Small businesses
- Print a call code on shop windows, menus or vans so customers can ring you without typing the number.
- SMS teams
- Put a text code with a keyword such as JOIN on posters and packaging to start an opt-in conversation with your short code or long number.
- Sales and events
- Add a vCard code to a business card, badge or booth sign so contacts save your name, number and email in one scan.
- Recruiters
- Put a contact code on job flyers so candidates save the recruiter's details instead of photographing the poster.
What can’t this tool tell you?
- It doesn't check whether a number is in service or can receive texts; it encodes the number you type.
- A code made here is static: to change the number or contact details you make and print a new code.
- Scanning behaviour depends on the phone and its camera or scanner app; test the printed code on more than one phone.
- It makes call, text and contact codes, not eSIM transfer codes or WhatsApp codes (use the WhatsApp link generator for wa.me).
Common questions
- Can you make a QR code for a phone number?
- Yes. A QR code containing tel: and the number in international form, such as tel:+14155552671, offers to call that number when scanned. The generator above writes it for you.
- How do I create a QR code for my phone number for free?
- Enter your number above, pick Call, press Make QR code and download the PNG or SVG. It runs in your browser, has no sign-up and the code never expires.
- Can I make a QR code for my phone number and email?
- Yes, with a vCard QR code: pick Contact, add your phone number and email, and the scanned code offers to save both as one contact.
- What is a vCard QR code?
- A QR code that contains a contact card in the vCard format (RFC 2426 or RFC 6350). Scanning it offers to add the name, numbers, email and address to the phone's contacts.
- Do vCard QR codes expire?
- Not when the vCard is in the code itself, as it is here: the code keeps working as long as it can be scanned. Hosted dynamic QR codes can stop working if the service that redirects them ends.
- How do I get a QR code for a phone number transfer?
- That is a different code: an eSIM transfer or activation QR code comes from your mobile carrier or your phone's settings and is tied to your account. This tool can't make one; it makes call, text and contact codes.
- How do I scan a QR code for a phone number?
- Point the phone's camera, or a QR scanner app, at the code and tap the prompt that appears. For a tel: code the phone offers to call; for a vCard it offers to save the contact.
- Does a QR code check that the phone number works?
- No. It stores whatever number you give it. The tool flags numbers that don't fit their country's numbering plan, but a valid format isn't proof the number is in service.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.
In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what the Email + Phone plan adds.
- 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: real line type, including US numbers
- Carrier name for every number looked up
