How do I reduce my email bounce rate?
Verify every list before you send, suppress every hard bounce permanently, and collect addresses in a way that catches typos at the source. Then check the source of the bounces: a spike from one import or one provider points to the cause faster than the overall number does.
In order of impact
Each step removes a different cause of bounces.
- Verify before sending, and again if the list is more than a few weeks old.
- Suppress hard bounces and never re-import them.
- Catch typos at signup (gmial.com, hotmial.com) with a typo prompt or a real-time check.
- Stop buying or scraping lists you cannot account for; they are the biggest single source of bounces.
- Send to unconfirmed (risky) addresses only in tested batches.
- Read the bounce messages: a 550 5.1.1 is a missing mailbox, while 550 5.7.x codes are about your sending reputation or authentication, which a verifier cannot fix.
