Area code time zone lookup: local time and who you can call now
An area code time zone lookup tells you where a North American number was issued and what time it is there. Enter a code like 503, or paste a list of numbers, to get each one's time zone, local time and whether it's inside your calling window, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. by default. Codes crossing a zone line are flagged.
8:00 to 21:00 local time is the federal TCPA window for telemarketing calls. Some states set narrower hours; adjust it to yours.
Sample result
It's Mon 10:30 AM in area code 415 (California), inside your calling window.

How to look up the time zone for an area code
- Type one area code, or paste numbers one per line or a CSV with a phone column. Any common format works: (212) 555-0147, +1 212 555 0147, 212.555.0147.
- Set your calling window if it isn't 8:00 to 21:00.
- Press Look up time zones. One code gives a single answer card; a list gives a table with a callable-now column.
- Download the CSV to sort your call list by time zone. Re-run it before each calling session, since the callable flag is for the moment you ran it.
Example
- You enter
- Two numbers,
(415) 555-0132and915-555-0199, with the default 8:00 to 21:00 calling window. - You get
- 415 is California on PT, with its local time and callable now set to yes inside the window; 915 is Texas and is flagged as spanning more than one time zone (CT and MT), with a local time for each.
- Limits
- Uploaded files can be up to 25 MB; there is no cap on the number of rows, and it all runs in your browser.
How do I find the time zone of an area code?
Look the code up in the North American Numbering Plan Administrator's area code database, which lists the time zones each code covers; this tool does that for you and applies daylight saving time. NANPA publishes a database of every area code with its location and zones. This tool is built from that file, with each of NANPA's zone letters mapped to the IANA time zone your browser uses for the clock, so daylight saving time is applied correctly, including in places that don't observe it, like most of Arizona, Saskatchewan, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The date of the NANPA file is shown under every result.
Overlay codes, a newer code added on top of an old one for the same area such as 986 over 208 in Idaho, share their partner's zones, since they cover the same ground. Where NANPA's single letter is known to be incomplete, the result says so: 907 in Alaska includes the Aleutian Islands on Hawaii-Aleutian time, Arizona's 928 includes the Navajo Nation, which does observe daylight saving time, and 867 covers Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Toll-free and other non-geographic codes, such as 800, have no time zone, and the tool says so.
What time zone are the most searched area codes in?
Most of the area codes people look up sit in a single zone. From NANPA's file: 312, 773 and 872 (Illinois), 281 and 713 (Texas) and 612 (Minnesota) are on Central Time. 202 (District of Columbia), 313 and 616 (Michigan), 443 (Maryland), 904 (Florida) and 212 (New York) are on Eastern Time. 801 (Utah) is on Mountain Time, and 425 (Washington), 702 (Nevada) and 714 (California) are on Pacific Time.
Two need care. 480 and 602 in Arizona are on Mountain Standard Time all year, so in summer they show the same clock time as California. 808 in Hawaii is on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time with no daylight saving time. In Canada, 403 (Alberta) is on Mountain Time and 416 (Ontario) on Eastern Time.
Which area codes span two time zones?
Twenty-seven area codes in service cover more than one zone, including 850 in the Florida panhandle, 270 and 606 in Kentucky, 605 in South Dakota, 915 in West Texas, 208 and 986 in Idaho, 541 and 458 in Oregon, and 906 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area code alone can't say which side of the line a number is on, so these are marked "depends on where" when only one zone is inside your window. If you want to be safe, call them during hours that are inside the window in both zones.
Remember that an area code is where a number was issued, not where its owner is today. People keep mobile numbers when they move, so a 212 number can belong to someone in Denver. For a list of mobiles, the area code is a reasonable default, not a guarantee.
What hours can you make sales calls under the TCPA?
Between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the called party's location. The federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act rules forbid telephone solicitations to a residential subscriber outside those hours, under 47 CFR 64.1200(c)(1). That's the default window here. Several states set narrower hours or restrict certain days, so set the window to the strictest rule that applies to you. This tool is a planning aid, not legal advice.
Time of day is one part of compliance. Whether you need prior consent depends largely on whether the number is a mobile, since autodialled and prerecorded calls and texts to mobiles need it, and the National Do Not Call Registry applies to residential numbers. Our guide to TCPA rules for mobiles and landlines explains the difference.
Time zone by area code or by ZIP code?
Both work for a call list. They answer slightly different questions:
| By area code (this tool) | By ZIP code | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | Just the phone number | A mailing address |
| What it reflects | Where the number was issued | Where the address is |
| Mobile owners who moved | Still shows the old area's zone | Current, if the address is up to date |
| Codes that cross a zone line | Flagged as "depends on where" | Not covered here |
| Canada and the Caribbean | Included, from the same NANPA file | Needs a separate postal code source |
If you have both, use the ZIP code for people who may have moved and the area code as the fallback.
Who uses this tool, and for what?
- Sales ops
- Paste the day's call list, download it with time zone and callable-now columns, and sort it so reps start with the East Coast and finish with Hawaii, inside the calling window everywhere.
- SMS teams
- Schedule texts by recipients' local time instead of your own, so a 9 a.m. reminder doesn't land at 6 a.m. on the West Coast. Check the message length with the SMS character counter.
- Recruiters
- Before calling candidates across the US and Canada, check what time it is for each one, and flag the area codes that cross a zone line so you don't guess.
- Agencies
- Split a client's national list into time-zone batches for dialing or SMS sends, with the multi-zone codes kept in their own group.
What can’t this tool tell you?
- An area code shows where a number was issued. Mobile owners who moved keep their old area code, and their old time zone in this lookup.
- Twenty-seven area codes cross a time zone line. The area code alone can't say which side a number is on.
- It covers the North American Numbering Plan only: the US, Canada and the Caribbean countries that use +1.
- The callable flag is for the moment you run it, and it uses the federal window. State rules can be stricter. It isn't legal advice.
- It doesn't tell you a number is in service or whether it's a mobile. Use the phone number validator and the landline or mobile checker for that.
Common questions
- What time zone is area code 503?
- Pacific Time. 503 and its overlay 971 cover north-west Oregon, including Portland. Type any area code above to see its zone and current local time.
- What time zone is area code 312?
- Central Time. 312 is in Illinois, with 773 and 872 covering the same Chicago area, all on Central Time.
- What time zone is area code 801?
- Mountain Time. 801 is in Utah, which observes daylight saving time, so it is on Mountain Daylight Time in summer.
- What time zone is area code 480?
- Mountain Standard Time all year. 480 is in Arizona, and most of Arizona doesn't observe daylight saving time, so in summer its clocks match California's.
- How do I find the time zone of a phone number?
- Take the area code, the three digits after the +1 country code, and look it up. Paste the number above in any format and the tool does that for you, along with the local time there now.
- Which area codes are in two time zones?
- Twenty-seven area codes in service cross a zone line, including 850 in Florida, 270, 364 and 606 in Kentucky, 605 in South Dakota, 915 in Texas, 208 and 986 in Idaho, 541 and 458 in Oregon, and 906 in Michigan. The tool flags each one.
- What hours can I make sales calls?
- Under the federal TCPA rules, telephone solicitations to residential numbers are allowed only between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the called party's location. Some states are stricter, so check the rules in the states you call.
- Does an area code tell me where the person is?
- It tells you where the number was issued. Mobile numbers move with their owners, so a number's area code and the person's current time zone can differ.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.
In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what the Email + Phone plan adds.
- 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: real line type, including US numbers
