Authentication and DNS

What is BIMI?

Also called: Brand Indicators for Message Identification, BIMI record

BIMI, Brand Indicators for Message Identification, is a DNS record that points to your logo so supporting mailbox providers can show it next to your messages. It only works on a domain with DMARC at enforcement, and Gmail also requires a verified mark certificate (VMC) or common mark certificate (CMC).

The record lives at default._bimi.example.com and points to an SVG logo in a specific profile (SVG Tiny PS) and, where required, to the certificate that proves you have the right to use the mark.

The DMARC requirement is the useful part. BIMI gives marketing teams a visible reason to finish the DMARC rollout to p=quarantine or p=reject, which is the step that actually stops spoofing.

BIMI is not a deliverability lever: it does not move mail from spam to inbox. Support and certificate rules differ by provider, so check each provider's own documentation.

Example

default._bimi.example.com TXT "v=BIMI1; l=https://example.com/logo.svg; a=https://example.com/vmc.pem"
