Twilio Lookup Alternatives for Line Type and Carrier Checks

··4 min read

Twilio Lookup is a good API, so the reasons to look elsewhere are usually about shape and price, not quality. At $0.008 per line type request (our October 2026 figure), 5,000 lookups cost about $40 a month. Teams switch when they want a cheaper API, a CSV upload instead of code, or emails checked in the same pass.

What Twilio Lookup gives you

Twilio's Lookup API takes a phone number and returns data packages you ask for. The two most people use:

  • Basic formatting and validation: whether the number is valid for its country, and its E.164 format.
  • Line type intelligence: the carrier serving the number and whether it's mobile, landline, VoIP and so on, from live carrier data. This is the paid request we compared.

It's the natural choice when you already send SMS or make calls through Twilio: same account, same keys, one bill. Its pricing is per request, so a quiet month costs little.

Price at about 5,000 numbers a month

Tool Monthly price What it covers Shape
Numverify $14.99 5,000 request cap API
Abstract API $19 5,000 request cap API
ClearoutPhone $31 Credit-based Dashboard + bulk upload
Veriphone $39 10 credits per live lookup API
Twilio Lookup $40 $0.008 × 5,000 API, pay as you go
SimpleVerifier Email + Phone $49.99 5,000 live lookups + unlimited email verification CSV upload
Byteplant $489.90 10,000 minimum tier API + bulk

From each vendor's pricing page on 11 October 2026. Twilio's row is arithmetic on its per-request price.

Four phone-only tools undercut Twilio at this volume. SimpleVerifier costs about $10 more, and the difference buys unlimited email verification and a CSV workflow, not cheaper phone lookups.

The question that matters: where does line type come from?

A low price often means the line type comes from numbering-plan data, not a live lookup. That's fine in most countries, where mobiles have their own prefixes. It fails in the US and Canada, where mobiles and landlines share area codes and numbers port between them.

Numbering-plan line type Live carrier line type
UK, France, Australia, India Usually right, by prefix Right, by current carrier
US and Canada "Mobile or landline" Mobile, landline or VoIP
Ported numbers Shows the original range Shows the current carrier

Twilio's line type intelligence is in the right-hand column. Before swapping it for a cheaper API, test a handful of US numbers you know are mobiles and landlines and see which column the answers come from. Mobile vs landline lookup explains the mechanics.

Cleaning a list without writing code

The typical non-developer problem is a spreadsheet: a few thousand leads, an email column, a phone column, and a campaign next week. Calling an API means writing a script, handling rate limits and merging the results back.

On SimpleVerifier you upload the CSV on the verifier and download the same file with columns added:

  • phone_status, phone_e164, phone_country and phone_type from the numbering plan, for every row. Unlimited on both plans.
  • On the Email + Phone plan, phone_carrier and phone_line_type from a live carrier lookup: mobile, landline or VoIP, up to 5,000 a month. Failed lookups don't count against the allowance.
  • If the file has emails, every address gets a live mailbox check too.

What we don't do: tell you whether a number is switched on right now. No line type lookup, Twilio's included, answers that.

Developers validating one number at a time should stay with an API. For cleaning lists before SMS or calling campaigns, see validating phone numbers for SMS and bulk phone number validation.

Common questions

How much does Twilio Lookup cost?

In our October 2026 comparison we used $0.008 per line type request from Twilio's pricing page, which is $40 for 5,000 lookups. Twilio publishes its current per-request prices on its Lookup pricing page, and volume discounts may apply.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Twilio Lookup?

For API use at about 5,000 numbers a month, yes: Numverify ($14.99), Abstract API ($19), ClearoutPhone ($31) and Veriphone ($39) all came in under $40 in October 2026. Check whether each one's line type comes from live carrier data or from the numbering plan, because that decides whether it can tell US mobiles from landlines.

Can I use Twilio Lookup without writing code?

Not directly. Lookup is an API, so you send numbers one request at a time from your own code or a no-code tool that calls it. If you want to upload a CSV and download the results, use a tool with a bulk upload.

Does Twilio Lookup tell me if a number is active?

Line type intelligence tells you the carrier and whether the number is mobile, landline or VoIP. Whether a number is switched on and answered is a different question that no line type lookup answers.
