Best Phone Number Validation Tools in 2026, Compared Honestly
There isn't one best phone validator; there's a best one for each job. For an API behind a form, the cheapest tools are Numverify ($14.99) and Abstract API ($19). For live line type on US numbers, Twilio Lookup is the usual choice. For cleaning lead lists that hold emails and phones, a tool that checks both in one upload replaces two subscriptions. Prices below are as of October 2026, for about 5,000 numbers a month.
Two layers of phone validation
Every tool does some mix of two checks, and they cost very different amounts to run.
- Numbering-plan validation. Is the number the right length, in an allocated range, for its country? What's its E.164 form, and what line type was the range allocated for? This runs on public data (most tools use Google's libphonenumber), so it costs almost nothing.
- Live carrier lookup. Which network serves the number today, and is it mobile, landline or VoIP? This queries carrier routing databases, so every lookup has a real cost.
The second layer matters most in the US and Canada, where mobiles and landlines share area codes, so the numbering plan can only say "mobile or landline". See mobile vs landline lookup.
No layer tells you that a number is switched on and answered by the person on your list.
The comparison
| Tool | ~5,000 numbers/month | How it's priced | Bulk CSV upload | Checks emails too |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Numverify | $14.99 | 5,000 request cap | No | No |
| Abstract API | $19 | 5,000 request cap | No | Separate API |
| ClearoutPhone | $31 | Credits | Yes | Separate product |
| Veriphone | $39 | 10 credits per live lookup | No | No |
| Twilio Lookup | $40 | $0.008 per lookup | No | No |
| SimpleVerifier Email + Phone | $49.99 | 5,000 live lookups, unlimited format checks | Yes | Yes, unlimited |
| Byteplant | $489.90 | 10,000 minimum tier | Yes | Separate product |
Prices from each vendor's own pricing page on 11 October 2026. Twilio's is arithmetic on its per-request price. "Separate product" means the vendor sells email verification, but on its own plan.
Yes, we're on the list, and we're not the cheapest phone validator. Five of these tools cost less than $49.99 for phones alone. What our plan adds is unlimited email verification in the same upload, which those tools would charge for separately or not offer.
Best for each job
Validating numbers in a signup form: Numverify or Abstract API
A form needs one call per submitted number and a quick yes or no. Both are simple JSON APIs with a request cap and the lowest prices here. If you'd rather not depend on a vendor at all, run libphonenumber in JavaScript or Python yourself.
Live line type for US numbers: Twilio Lookup
If you send texts through Twilio already, its Lookup API with line type intelligence keeps everything on one account. Per-request pricing suits uneven volume. See Twilio Lookup alternatives if the price or the API-only shape doesn't fit.
A dashboard and bulk upload for phones only: ClearoutPhone
The cheapest tool here with bulk upload as a core feature. A good choice if you only ever clean phone lists.
Very large volumes: Byteplant or Twilio
Byteplant's smallest monthly tier is 10,000 numbers at $489.90; at that scale, ask both for volume pricing.
Lead lists with emails and phones: SimpleVerifier
Most B2B lead files and CRM exports carry both. Upload the CSV on the verifier and every row comes back with:
- Email: a live mailbox check, with catch-all, disposable and role detection.
- Phone: validity, E.164, country and numbering-plan line type. Unlimited on both plans.
- On Email + Phone: a live carrier lookup giving real line type (mobile, landline or VoIP) and carrier name, up to 5,000 a month. Failed lookups don't count.
The $29.99 Pro plan includes everything except the live carrier lookups.
What to test before you pay
- A few US numbers you know. Your own mobile, an office landline, a Google Voice number. Does the tool say "mobile or landline", or does it tell them apart?
- A number with a typo. One digit short. It should come back invalid, not "unknown".
- Numbers without a country code. Does the tool let you set a default country, or does it guess? See international phone number format.
- Your real file. If you'll clean CSVs, check the tool keeps your other columns.

Common questions
What is the best phone number validation tool?
It depends on the job. For an API behind a signup form, Numverify and Abstract API are the cheapest at about 5,000 checks a month. For live carrier data on US numbers, Twilio Lookup is the common choice. For cleaning CSVs with both emails and phones, a tool that checks both in one upload saves a second subscription.
Is there a free phone number validator?
Yes, for the numbering-plan check. Google's open-source libphonenumber, and free tools built on it, tell you whether a number is valid for its country, its E.164 format and the line type its range was allocated for. Live carrier data costs money because each lookup queries a paid database.
Can a phone validator tell if a number is in service?
Not reliably. Validation confirms a number sits in an allocated range; a carrier lookup tells you which network serves it and whether it is mobile, landline or VoIP. Neither proves a phone is switched on or that the right person answers.
Do I need a carrier lookup?
Only if line type matters and you have US or Canadian numbers. Outside North America, the prefix usually shows whether a number is a mobile. In the US and Canada it doesn't, so SMS senders and cold callers there need a live lookup.
