googlemail.com vs gmail.com: Same Inbox, and What It Means for Your List
googlemail.com is Gmail. An address at googlemail.com and the same username at gmail.com deliver to one inbox, and both domains use the same Google mail servers. It exists because Google couldn't use the Gmail name in the UK and Germany for several years. Users from that period kept their googlemail.com addresses, and they are still in plenty of lists today.
For anyone managing a list, that has two consequences: googlemail.com is a free personal provider, not a company domain, and it creates duplicates that a simple text comparison won't catch.
The evidence: same servers, same inbox
Mail routing is decided by MX records, and googlemail.com's point to Gmail. We looked them up on 11 October 2026:
| Domain | Primary MX host |
|---|---|
| gmail.com | gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com |
| googlemail.com | gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com |
Identical. Any mail sent to @googlemail.com lands on the same machines as @gmail.com. Google's Gmail help likewise describes googlemail.com and gmail.com as interchangeable for the same account.
You can check it yourself on our gmail.com domain page, which shows Gmail's live mail setup.
Why googlemail.com exists
Google launched Gmail in 2004 but didn't hold the name "Gmail" everywhere. In Germany, a company already had a trademark on "G-mail" for a mail service. In the UK, a financial firm had an earlier claim to the name. Rather than fight it out country by country, Google gave users in those countries @googlemail.com addresses.
Google later resolved both disputes and moved new UK and German signups to gmail.com. Existing users could switch, but many never did, and anyone who signed up in those years may still give out a googlemail.com address.
Why it matters for your list
1. It's personal, not business
If you split leads into work and personal addresses, googlemail.com goes on the personal side. It is easy to miss, because it isn't one of the domains people expect to see on a free-provider list. A "work email only" rule that checks for gmail.com alone will let it through. Our free email providers list includes googlemail.com alongside the 78 other consumer domains we checked, and you can download it as CSV.
2. It creates duplicates
jane.doe@googlemail.com and janedoe@gmail.com are the same person. Two Gmail rules combine here:
- Domain: googlemail.com equals gmail.com.
- Dots: Google ignores dots in Gmail usernames, so
jane.doeequalsjanedoe.
Add plus-addressing (janedoe+news@gmail.com also reaches janedoe@gmail.com) and one person can appear in your list four ways. Send to all four and you've emailed them four times, which is how spam complaints start.
To deduplicate safely, build a comparison key without changing the address you actually send to:
- Lower-case the address.
- If the domain is
googlemail.com, treat it asgmail.com. - For Gmail addresses only, remove dots from the username and anything after a
+. - Compare keys; keep one row per key.
Don't apply rule 3 to other domains. On a company domain, even one hosted by Google Workspace, dots can be part of a different address. We cover the full set of Gmail rules in how to check if a Gmail address exists.
3. Should you rewrite googlemail.com to gmail.com?
No. Keep the address exactly as the person gave it. Both versions deliver today, but the one they typed is the one they recognise, and it's the one their filters and contacts are set up for. Use the gmail.com form only as a matching key for deduplication.
Does verification treat it differently?
No. A mailbox check on googlemail.com asks the same Google servers the same question as one on gmail.com, and gets the same answer: 250 for an account that exists, 550 5.1.1 for one that doesn't. In SimpleVerifier, googlemail.com addresses are verified exactly like gmail.com ones and flagged as a free provider.
To see how many duplicates and dead mailboxes a list holds before you pay for anything, drop the CSV into the free list check. It already treats googlemail.com and gmail.com as one inbox, ignores dots and +tags when matching Gmail duplicates, and needs no signup.

Common questions
Is googlemail.com a real email domain?
Yes. googlemail.com belongs to Google and delivers to Gmail. When we looked up its MX records on 11 October 2026 they pointed at gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com, the same servers that receive mail for gmail.com.
Do googlemail.com and gmail.com go to the same inbox?
Yes. Both domains route to the same Google mail servers and map to the same Gmail account, so name@googlemail.com and name@gmail.com are one mailbox.
Why do some people have googlemail.com addresses?
Trademark disputes. Google could not use the Gmail name in the UK and Germany for several years, so accounts created there were given googlemail.com. Google later regained the name in both countries, but older users kept their googlemail.com addresses.
Is googlemail.com a free email provider or a business domain?
A free consumer provider, exactly like gmail.com. If you separate personal from work addresses, googlemail.com belongs on the personal side.
