How to Export Shopify Customer Emails and Clean the List Before a Campaign
To get an email list from Shopify, open Customers in Shopify admin, press Export, choose All customers and CSV, then keep only the rows where Accepts Email Marketing is yes. Merge repeated addresses, fix typo domains like gmial.com, and check the list before the first campaign, because Shopify only suppresses an address after it has already bounced. Customers who said no can still get order emails, so keep them in a separate file.
The free Shopify customers to email list tool does the split and the merge in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Step 1: export the customers
- In Shopify admin, open Customers.
- Press Export. Choose All customers, or a segment you've filtered to.
- Choose CSV for Excel or plain CSV. Shopify emails the file for large stores.
Shopify lists the export's columns in its customer export help. Want only buyers from a date range or a product? Export from Orders instead. That file has one row per line item, so one customer can appear several times; the tool folds them into one row per address.
Step 2: split subscribers from everyone else
The Accepts Email Marketing column (older exports call it Accepts Marketing) is the consent Shopify recorded: yes when the customer ticked the marketing box at checkout, signed up through a form or was marked subscribed; no otherwise.
| File | Who's in it | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | Accepts Email Marketing = yes | Campaigns, newsletters, flows |
| Not subscribed | Accepts Email Marketing = no | Order and account emails only |
Mixing the two is the most common migration mistake. The ICO's guidance on electronic mail marketing explains the narrow "soft opt-in" for existing customers in the UK; in the US, the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide covers commercial email.
Step 3: remove repeats and fix typos
- Repeats: the same shopper can have several customer records, especially from orders exports. Merge them case-insensitively. The tool does it; so does remove duplicate emails.
- Typo domains: checkout fields collect
gmial.com,hotmial.comandyaho.com. Run the file through the email typo corrector before anything else. - Fake and throwaway addresses: discount pop-ups attract them. The bulk disposable email checker flags throwaway domains, and our post on fake Shopify customer accounts covers bot sign-ups.
Step 4: check the addresses before the first send
Shopify stores whatever the shopper typed, and inboxes close over time. Shopify's own bounce handling only kicks in after the first bounce. Gmail and Yahoo look at bounces and complaints when deciding where your mail lands (Google's sender guidelines), and a new Klaviyo or Mailchimp account starts with no history to absorb them.
- Upload the subscriber file on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
- Import the valid file into your email platform as the main audience.
- Send to risky addresses (catch-all domains, unconfirmed consumer mailboxes) in a smaller batch after the main send looks healthy.
- Leave invalid addresses out, and add them to your platform's suppression list.
The Shopify email list checker gives a quick read on a pasted list first. Many store lists are heavy on Apple addresses; see checking iCloud addresses.
Step 5: keep it clean
Re-check before big sends such as Black Friday, and check new signups as they come in. Our ecommerce email verification guide covers checkout-time checks without blocking real orders, and how often to verify your list covers the schedule. For a store with a large list every month, the bulk email verifier page explains the monthly options.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Exporting, splitting and merging are free and run in your browser. For the mailbox check, the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
How do I export customer emails from Shopify?
In Shopify admin, open Customers, press Export, choose All customers (or a segment) and CSV. The file has an Email column and an Accepts Email Marketing column.
How do I export only subscribed customers from Shopify?
Filter the customer list by email subscription status before exporting, or export everyone and split the file on the Accepts Email Marketing column.
Can I email Shopify customers who didn't accept marketing?
They can get emails about their orders, such as receipts and shipping updates. Marketing email to them needs another legal basis; in the UK the ICO describes a narrow soft opt-in for existing customers. Keep them out of campaign lists unless your rules allow it.
Does Shopify remove bad email addresses?
Shopify suppresses an address after it bounces, but its help pages describe no check before the first send. The first bounce still counts against you.
Should I check a Shopify list before moving to Klaviyo?
Yes. A first send from a new platform with a pile of dead addresses starts that account with a high bounce rate. Check the list first and import only the valid file to the main audience.
Check your list before you send
Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
