Shopify Email Bounces: What Suppression Does, What It Doesn't, and How to Check a List First

··3 min read

Shopify suppresses an address after it bounces, so you won't keep emailing it, but its help pages describe no check before the first send. Every new bad address still bounces once. On a store with years of checkout typos, bot sign-ups and imported lists, that first round of bounces is the one that hurts. Shopify itself asks you to review an imported list before you use it and to clean your subscriber list regularly; checking the export before a big campaign is the practical way to do both.

Everything quoted is from Shopify's subscriber list management article, read 2 November 2026.

What Shopify says about bounces

  • "That email address is automatically suppressed from future email sends" after a bounce.
  • Addresses that consistently bounce "can't be emailed using Shopify Messaging."

What the article doesn't say: where to see the suppressed addresses, or any bounce rate at which Shopify acts on your store. Don't assume there's no line; Shopify just doesn't publish one on this page.

What it asks you to do

  1. Review imported lists first. "You should review all names and email addresses on the list first."
  2. Mail only people who agreed. Promotional email only to customers who agreed to receive marketing from your store. Buying a list is prohibited.
  3. Remove role addresses by hand. Shopify recommends removing addresses like info@ "because they're probably not monitored", which can hurt open rates. See role-based email addresses.
  4. Clean regularly. "You should regularly clean your subscribers list to maintain an engaged audience."

People are removed automatically when they unsubscribe, mark a message as spam, or opt out in their account. To remove someone yourself, open the customer, choose Edit marketing settings, clear the consent box and save.

Where the bad addresses on a store come from

Source What it looks like Fix
Checkout typos gmial.com, hotmial.com, missing letters Check at entry; fix or remove later
Bot sign-ups Bursts of gibberish accounts Bot protection, double opt-in; see fake Shopify customer accounts
Old imports A list moved from another platform years ago Check before the first send
Time Real customers whose mailbox closed Re-check before big campaigns

Check the list before a campaign

  1. Export the subscribers. In Customers, pick the email subscribers segment, click Export and download the CSV. The Shopify export guide has the details.
  2. Run it through the Shopify email list checker first. It flags bad syntax, duplicates, typo and dead domains and disposable addresses in your browser, for free.
  3. Verify the full file at /verify. Valid, risky and invalid download separately.
  4. Clear consent for the invalid ones in Shopify (Edit marketing settings) so they're out of future sends.
  5. Send to valid addresses first. Hold risky ones (catch-all, role) for a smaller send or leave them out.

Black Friday and big seasonal sends are when a dead list shows up. Our Black Friday list prep post has a timeline.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

SimpleVerifier checks a Shopify customer export and labels each address valid, risky (with the reason) or invalid. The first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in on the verify page. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. One-time packs of 10,000 checks for $15 never expire (CSV only). See pricing, or compare options on the best email verifier for Shopify page.

Common questions

Does Shopify Email remove bounced emails?

It suppresses them. Shopify's subscriber list article says an address that bounces is automatically suppressed from future sends, and that addresses that consistently bounce can't be emailed through Shopify Messaging. The customer record stays.

Does Shopify verify customer emails before sending?

Its help pages don't describe a check before sending. Suppression happens after a bounce, so the first email to a bad address still bounces.

Can I import an email list into Shopify?

Yes, with consent. Shopify says to review all names and addresses on a list before importing it and to send promotional email only to customers who agreed to receive marketing. Buying a list and adding it is prohibited.

Should I remove info@ and sales@ addresses from my Shopify list?

Shopify recommends removing role-based addresses manually because they're probably not monitored, which can hurt your open rate over time.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
