How to Export Slack Member Emails (and Clean the List Before You Send)

··3 min read

To get member emails from Slack, a workspace owner or admin opens Tools & settings > Manage members and chooses Export member list. The CSV has each member's email and a status column (Member, Workspace Admin, Workspace Owner, guest types, Deactivated or Bot). Set aside deactivated accounts and bots, merge people who appear in several workspaces, and check the addresses before a big announcement, because deactivated members' work inboxes are often closed.

The free Slack members to email list tool reads the export in your browser, labels each role and sets aside deactivated accounts and bots.

Step 1: export the member list

  1. In Slack, open the workspace menu, then Tools & settings > Manage members.
  2. Choose Export member list.

Only owners and admins see the option. The CSV has one row per account with email, status, billing-active, userid, fullname and displayname.

Running a community on something else? For Microsoft Teams, export the team's members from the Teams admin center; for Google Groups, open Members and choose Export. The same tool reads those files. Discord doesn't show members' emails to server owners, so there's nothing to export; use a signup form and the form responses tool.

Step 2: read the status column

Status What to do
Member, Workspace Admin, Workspace Owner Keep
Multi-Channel Guest, Single-Channel Guest Keep or set aside, depending on the message
Deactivated Set aside
Bot Remove

A Slack account is usually deactivated when someone leaves the company or community. If they joined with a work address, that inbox is often closed soon after, and mail to it bounces. Keep them in a separate file if you want to write to former members anyway.

Step 3: merge several workspaces

Paste or upload member lists from more than one workspace and the tool merges repeats into one row. Mixed-case duplicates (Ana@ and ana@) are merged too.

Step 4: check the addresses

Community lists age fast: people change jobs, and some joined with throwaway addresses.

  1. Download the active-member list from the tool.
  2. Flag throwaway domains with the bulk disposable email checker.
  3. Upload the list on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
  4. Send to the valid file.

Moving the community to a newsletter platform? Import only the valid file; see importing a list to Beehiiv, Kit or Substack. Our email list cleaning service page explains what a full clean covers.

Step 5: ask before marketing

Joining a workspace isn't agreement to marketing email. Use the list for messages about the community itself, or send one message asking members to opt in to a newsletter. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide covers US commercial email; the UK and EU expect consent before marketing to individuals. Our double opt-in vs verification post covers how the two fit together.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

Cleaning the member export is free and runs in your browser. For the mailbox check, the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.

Common questions

Who can export a Slack member list?

Workspace owners and admins, from Manage members (Export member list). Members without admin rights can't download it.

What columns does the Slack member export have?

One row per account with email, status, billing-active, userid, fullname and displayname. The status column gives the role or state: Member, Workspace Admin, Workspace Owner, Multi-Channel Guest, Single-Channel Guest, Deactivated or Bot.

Should I email deactivated Slack members?

Usually not. A Slack account is usually deactivated when someone leaves the company or community, and a work inbox often closes soon after, so mail to it bounces.

Can I get member emails from Discord?

No. Discord doesn't show members' email addresses to server owners, so there's nothing to export. Collect emails with a signup form instead.

Can I send a newsletter to my Slack members?

Joining a workspace isn't agreement to marketing email. Use the list for messages about the community, or ask members to opt in first.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
