How to Export Intercom Contacts to an Email List Without the Opt-Outs
To get an email list out of Intercom, export your users and leads from the Contacts page as CSV, including the Unsubscribed from Emails, Has hard bounced and Marked email as spam attributes, and set aside every contact marked true in any of them. Import those as a suppression list in your next tool, then check the remaining addresses before the first send: Intercom only marks an address as bounced after a message has already failed.
The free Intercom contacts to email list tool does the split in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Step 1: export the contacts
- In Intercom, open Contacts.
- Filter to the users or leads you want, or select all of them.
- Export as CSV, and include the Unsubscribed from Emails, Has hard bounced and Marked email as spam attributes.
- Download the file from the link Intercom emails you.
Intercom's contact model keeps those three as true/false flags.
Step 2: set aside the contacts you can't email
| Attribute | Why to leave them out |
|---|---|
| Unsubscribed from Emails = true | They opted out; emailing them again breaks CAN-SPAM's opt-out rule and invites complaints |
| Has hard bounced = true | The address already failed |
| Marked email as spam = true | They complained; another send risks another complaint |
Keep these in a separate file and import it as a suppression list in the email platform you're moving to. Our post on cold email suppression lists explains why suppression has to travel with the list.
Step 3: check the rest
Has hard bounced only appears after a failed send. Everyone you haven't emailed yet, often most signups and chat leads, has never been checked, and product signups collect typos and throwaway inboxes.
- Download the email list from the tool.
- Fix typo domains with the email typo corrector and flag throwaway domains with the bulk disposable email checker.
- Upload the list on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
- Import the valid file into your email platform.
Google's sender guidelines judge a sender on spam complaints and authentication from the first send, and a new platform account has no history to absorb a bad start. See verifying a list before switching ESP.
Step 4: stop new bad signups
Batch cleaning fixes the past. To keep bad addresses out at signup, check them as they're entered; our guides to verifying trial signups and stopping fake signups cover the options, and the email verification API page shows how to wire it in.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Splitting the export is free and runs in your browser. For the mailbox check, the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
How do I export contacts from Intercom?
Open Contacts, filter to the users or leads you want (or select all), and export as CSV. Intercom emails a download link.
Which Intercom contacts should I leave out of an email list?
The ones Intercom already knows not to email: contacts marked true for Unsubscribed from Emails, Has hard bounced or Marked email as spam. Keep them as a suppression list.
Does Intercom check email addresses before sending?
Intercom sets Has hard bounced after a message to that address fails. Contacts you haven't emailed yet have never been checked, which is why signup and chat lists still bounce.
Are Intercom leads and users both included?
Yes, if you export both. Rows without an email address, such as anonymous visitors, can't go on an email list.
Why does a SaaS signup list bounce?
Signups type their address once, often without confirmation, and work addresses close when people change jobs. An old user list collects both.
Check your list before you send
Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
