How to Export Customer Emails From Stripe (and Merge the Duplicates)
To get an email list from Stripe, open Customers in the Stripe Dashboard, press Export and download the CSV, then merge the rows that share an email, because Stripe doesn't deduplicate customers by address. Keep paying customers, set delinquent ones aside before a promotion, and only send marketing to people who agreed to it. Check the addresses before a big send: a card keeps working long after the work inbox it was bought with has closed.
The free Stripe customers to email list tool merges the duplicates and adds up spend in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Step 1: export the customers
- In the Stripe Dashboard, open Customers.
- Press Export. Choose the date range and the columns: keep Email, Name, Created, Total Spend, Payment Count and Delinquent.
- Download the CSV (
unified_customers.csv).
A payments export (Payments > Export, with Customer Email) also works if you only want people who paid in a date range.
Step 2: merge duplicate customers
Every flow that creates a customer without looking up an existing one adds another record with the same address: Checkout or Payment Links set to always create a customer, a second subscription bought while logged out, an import. So one buyer can be cus_A, cus_B and cus_C, each with part of their spend.
Group the rows by email, case-insensitively, and add up Total Spend and Payment Count. The tool keeps every customer ID in one cell and the earliest Created date, so each person appears once with their real lifetime spend. People who used two different emails stay separate; there's no way to know from the file that they're the same person.
Step 3: decide who gets which email
| Group | How to find them | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Paying customers | Payment Count of 1 or more | Product updates, renewals, receipts; marketing only with consent |
| Delinquent | Delinquent = true | Payment-failure emails; leave out of promotions |
| Never paid | Payment Count 0 | Usually trial or abandoned checkouts; check consent before any campaign |
Stripe stores no marketing consent on the customer record unless you collected it, for example with Checkout's promotional email consent. Account and transactional email is fine. For marketing, the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide covers the US, and the EU and UK need opt-in or a narrow existing-customer exception.
Step 4: check the addresses
Failed-payment and renewal emails that bounce are lost revenue twice: the customer never sees the card update request, and the bounce lands on the domain your receipts come from. Our post on failed payment emails to bad addresses covers that side.
- Download the merged list from the tool.
- Upload it on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
- Send the campaign to the valid file. For invalid addresses on active subscriptions, ask the customer to update their email in-app instead of emailing them.
For SaaS signups that never reach Stripe, see verifying trial signups. Want to check new customers automatically instead of in batches? The email verification API page shows how.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Exporting and merging are free and run in your browser. For the mailbox check, the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
How do I export customer emails from Stripe?
In the Stripe Dashboard, open Customers and press Export. Pick the date range and columns and download the CSV; it has Email, Name, Created, Total Spend and Payment Count columns.
Why does the same email appear several times in my Stripe export?
Stripe doesn't deduplicate customers by email. Checkout or Payment Links set to always create a customer, a second purchase while logged out, or an import each add another record with the same address.
Can I send marketing emails to my Stripe customers?
The export doesn't say who agreed. Stripe stores marketing consent only if you collected it, for example with Checkout's promotional email consent, which is recorded on the Checkout Session. Use addresses you have consent for and follow CAN-SPAM, GDPR or PECR as they apply.
What does delinquent mean in a Stripe export?
Stripe sets delinquent when an automatic invoice payment fails or an invoice passes its due date, and clears it when the invoice is paid. Set those customers aside before a promotion.
Can I merge duplicate customers in Stripe itself?
Stripe has no one-click merge; you'd have to move payment methods and subscriptions to one customer. Merging in the export is enough for an email list.
