Verify PhantomBuster Emails Before You Send: LinkedIn Scrapes, Pattern Guesses and Catch-Alls
Verify PhantomBuster emails before you send them, because Email Discovery builds most addresses from name-and-domain patterns. PhantomBuster says it then runs MX and SMTP checks, which removes dead domains and many dead mailboxes, but on catch-all company domains a pattern like first.last@ passes whether or not the person exists. Merge the email columns into one, dedupe, run every address through a live mailbox check, send valid rows first and treat catch-alls as a separate, smaller batch.
How PhantomBuster finds emails
From PhantomBuster's own pages, read 8 November 2026:
- Its Email Discovery credits guide says Email Discovery tests common email patterns and then "performs MX/SMTP checks to reduce bounces and improve deliverability", and that you can "connect an external provider (Dropcontact, Hunter, Snov.io) via API key".
- Its help article How Email Discovery Works and Why Some Emails Might Be Missing describes a credit as one attempt to find and verify an email for one profile, and lists reasons cells come back empty: no match, typos in the input, profiles outside your network, or no credits left.
That's a reasonable first pass. The catch is in the method. A pattern guess plus an SMTP check works on domains that reject unknown mailboxes. It doesn't work on catch-all domains, which accept any address during the check. There, [email protected] "passes" whether or not that person has a mailbox.
Why scraped LinkedIn lists bounce
- Pattern guesses on catch-all domains. The biggest source, as above.
- Stale profiles. LinkedIn shows the job people last updated. Some left months ago.
- Mixed sources. If one run used PhantomBuster credits and another used Hunter or Snov.io, the file mixes different checks done at different times.
- Company domain errors. The scraper picks up the company website; a parent brand, a redirect or a typo gives the wrong mail domain.
The pre-send routine
1. Merge into one email column
If you ran several Phantoms or switched providers between runs, you'll end up with more than one email column or file. Combine them with fill missing emails or the CSV column editor so every row has one address, and keep the LinkedIn profile URL as the row key. Tidy the URLs with the LinkedIn URL cleaner.
2. Fix domains and dedupe
- Check the email domain matches the company website with the email website domain match checker.
- Remove duplicates with remove duplicate emails. Repeat runs on overlapping searches produce a lot of them.
- Cap contacts per company with limit contacts per company.
3. Verify every row
Upload the file to the verify page. Each address gets a live SMTP mailbox check and comes back:
| Status | Action |
|---|---|
| Valid | Main sequence |
| Risky (catch-all) | Hold for a small second batch, best grades first |
| Risky (role, disposable, full) | Drop |
| Invalid | Suppress; try another pattern with the email permutator if the lead matters |
| Unknown | Re-check tomorrow |
SimpleVerifier never calls a catch-all valid; it grades each one with the reason so you can decide how far down to send (catch-all scoring). For scraped lists, expect a large share of catch-alls; why most of my list is risky explains why that's normal and what to do.
4. Send in waves
- Valid rows first.
- Catch-alls a day later, a few hundred at most. Stop if hard bounces in that wave pass 2%; most cold email tools pause around there (see bounce rate thresholds by platform).
- Put invalid rows in your sequencer's suppression list.
If the email cell is empty
For leads you really want, find the address another way rather than guessing blindly: the LinkedIn email finder and the email format finder help, and find email from a LinkedIn profile walks through it. Verify the result like everything else.
The legal side
Scraped data carries the same rules as any cold email list, plus the platform's own terms. Read is it legal to collect business emails, CAN-SPAM for cold email and GDPR for B2B cold email.
What checking costs
PhantomBuster charges per discovery attempt; checking with SimpleVerifier is a flat monthly price:
- Starter, $9 a month: 2,500 checks.
- Pro, $39 a month: Unlimited email verification.*
- Business, $99 a month: the first 300,000 checks a month at full speed, 5 seats.
- Agency, $249 a month: the first 750,000 checks a month at full speed, 15 seats, client workspaces.
*Pro fair use: the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing. Check your list free: the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in.

Common questions
Does PhantomBuster verify the emails it finds?
PhantomBuster says Email Discovery tests common email patterns and then runs MX and SMTP checks to reduce bounces. That screens out dead domains and many dead mailboxes, but on catch-all domains an SMTP check can't confirm the mailbox. Verify again before sending.
Why are some PhantomBuster email cells empty?
Its help center lists no match in the data providers, typos or inconsistencies in the input, a LinkedIn profile outside your network that hides company information, and running out of monthly credits.
Can I use Hunter or Dropcontact inside PhantomBuster?
Yes. PhantomBuster says you can connect an external provider such as Dropcontact, Hunter or Snov.io with your own API key. Each provider checks emails its own way, so verify the merged result with one tool.
Is it legal to email people I scraped from LinkedIn?
It depends on where they are and how you contact them. Read our guides on CAN-SPAM, GDPR for B2B cold email and whether it's legal to collect business emails before you send.
