How to Export Your LinkedIn Connections' Emails (and Why Most Are Missing)

··3 min read

To export your LinkedIn connections' emails, go to Me > Settings & Privacy > Data privacy > Get a copy of your data, request the larger archive that includes connections, and open Connections.csv from the zip. Expect most rows to have no email: LinkedIn only exports an address for connections who allow their connections to see or download it. The addresses you do get are often old personal sign-up emails, so label work versus personal and check them before you send anything.

The free LinkedIn connections to email list tool skips LinkedIn's notes above the header, keeps the rows with an email and marks each one work or personal, in your browser.

Step 1: request the archive

  1. On LinkedIn, open Me, then Settings & Privacy.
  2. Open Data privacy, then Get a copy of your data.
  3. Choose the larger data archive, which includes connections, and request it.
  4. When LinkedIn's email arrives, download and unzip the archive and find Connections.csv.

This is from LinkedIn's help article on exporting connections, which also says the CSV doesn't support every character set, so some names may come out garbled. Only 1st-degree connections are included.

Step 2: understand the blank emails

LinkedIn's help says the export includes an email only for connections who allowed their connections to see or download it. That's each member's choice, so a typical file has a blank Email Address column on most rows. The tool tells you exactly how many shared one.

The emails that are there are the addresses members signed up with, sometimes years ago. Many are personal Gmail or Outlook accounts, not current work addresses.

Step 3: separate work from personal

For B2B outreach, a personal address from 2016 is a weak contact and often a dead one. The tool labels each address using our list of free email providers; tick Keep work addresses only to drop personal mailboxes. Our post on business vs personal email covers when each is appropriate.

Need work emails for connections who didn't share one? That's a different job: see finding an email from a LinkedIn profile, or the bulk email permutator to generate candidates from name and company domain, then check them.

Step 4: check before you send

People change jobs and close mailboxes, and LinkedIn never updates exported emails. A list built from old sign-up addresses bounces more than one you collected recently; see why cold emails bounce.

  1. Download the clean file from the tool.
  2. Upload it on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
  3. Send personal notes to the valid file. Don't put risky or invalid rows into a sequencer.

Step 5: stay on the right side of the rules

Being connected isn't the same as opting in to marketing email. The GDPR and B2B cold email and CAN-SPAM guides cover what each law requires. Keep sends personal and small, include a way to opt out, and honour it. If you are building a real outreach list, our page on verifying a list before cold email covers the full workflow.

Common questions

How do I export my LinkedIn connections with emails?

Go to Me, Settings & Privacy, Data privacy, Get a copy of your data, and request the larger archive that includes connections. LinkedIn emails a download link; Connections.csv inside the zip has an Email Address column.

Why are email addresses missing from my LinkedIn export?

LinkedIn only exports an email for connections who allow their connections to see or download it. It's a privacy setting each member controls, so expect most rows to be blank.

Can I export 2nd-degree connections?

No. The archive includes only your 1st-degree connections.

Can I email my LinkedIn connections?

You can contact people you know, but an export isn't consent to add them to a marketing list. Commercial email laws such as CAN-SPAM, PECR and GDPR still apply; a personal note to a few people is very different from a bulk campaign.

Why does Connections.csv look broken in Excel?

The first rows are LinkedIn's notes, not data. Delete the rows above the First Name header, or run the file through a tool that skips them.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
