How to Export Clover Customers to an Email List (and Split the Double-Email Cells)
To get an email list out of Clover, export the customer list from the Clover web dashboard, split any cell that holds more than one address, and keep only customers who allow marketing. In the dashboard that is Customers > Customers list > Options > Download. Then merge repeated addresses, set aside anyone marked as not allowing marketing, and check the rest before you import them into Mailchimp, Klaviyo or another email tool.
The free Clover customers to email list tool does the splitting, merging and sorting in your browser. Here is what each step involves.
Step 1: export the customer list
Clover's help article Export a customer list (read 2 November 2026) describes the export from the web dashboard:
- Log in to your Clover dashboard on the web (Clover devices can't export the full list).
- Select Customers > Customers list.
- Select Options > Download.
- Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets.
Clover exports the whole list; Shopify's Clover migration guide says the same and suggests filtering afterwards. Clover's help pages and menus vary by country, so if the button has moved, look for a download option on the Customers list.
Column names aren't documented. Clover doesn't publish its export headers. Expect name, phone and email columns, and possibly a marketing column, but check your own file before relying on any filter. Integrators also report that notes, business name, birthday and purchase history are left out, and that some exports have topped out around 1,000 customers. If your file looks short, compare it with the count in the dashboard.
Step 2: split cells with more than one address
A Clover customer can have several email addresses, and the export can write them all into one cell, for example ana@example.com, ana.work@example.com. Mailchimp and most other tools read that as one invalid address and drop the row.
Split each cell so every address gets its own row with the same name, phone and consent value. The Clover tool does this automatically; for any other file, the split multiple emails in a cell tool does the same job.
Step 3: keep customers who allow marketing
Clover's help on payment receipts says that "When a customer chooses to receive their receipt by email, they can opt in to receive marketing or promotional emails", if the merchant has turned on Allow customers to opt-in to marketing. Clover's developer docs store this as marketingAllowed, which "Indicates if the customer allows receiving of marketing communication." Whether the dashboard CSV carries it as a column isn't documented, so look for a marketing column in your file:
| Value | For a promotional email |
|---|---|
| true / yes | Send |
| false / no | Don't send. Add the address to your new tool's suppression list |
| blank | No record of consent. Ask first, for example with a sign-up link on the receipt or at the till |
Giving an email for a receipt isn't the same as signing up for promotions. In the US, the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide sets the rules for commercial email, including a postal address and a working opt-out in every message; UK, EU and Canadian rules are stricter about consent. If the export has no marketing column at all, treat the list as unconsented until you know how the addresses were collected.
Step 4: merge repeats
The same customer often has two profiles, one from a card and one from a phone number or a typed email. Keep one row per address, and let a "no" on any copy win: if one profile says marketing isn't allowed, the person said no. The duplicate contact finder also matches the same person across two different addresses by name.
Step 5: check the addresses
Addresses typed at a counter or read out over the phone carry more typos than ones people type themselves: gmial.com, yaho.com, a dropped letter. A new email account whose first campaign bounces hard can be slowed or suspended, so check before the import.
- Run the list through the email typo corrector to fix obvious domain typos.
- Upload it on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
- Import the valid file, with its consent value, into your email tool.
A check confirms whether a mailbox exists, not whether the customer agreed to hear from you. Some addresses also come back risky, which means unconfirmed: catch-all business domains and Microsoft's consumer domains (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) often can't be confirmed either way. For a list that's years old, our post on mailing an old email list covers how to pace the first sends.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Exporting, splitting and sorting are free and run in your browser; nothing is uploaded. For the mailbox check, upload the list on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks, which covers most shop lists; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
How do I export my customer list from Clover?
Log in to the Clover web dashboard, select Customers > Customers list, then Options > Download, and open the CSV in Excel. Clover's help says devices can't export the full list. The file covers all customers; filter it afterwards.
Why does my Clover export have two emails in one cell?
Clover lets a customer profile hold more than one address, and integrators report that the export writes them all into the same column. Split the cell into one row per address before importing, or the email tool will read it as one broken address.
Can I send marketing email to every Clover customer?
Not safely. Clover's help says customers who get an emailed receipt can opt in to marketing, and its API stores that as marketingAllowed. Send promotions only to customers who opted in, and check the rules where your customers are.
Why are some customers missing from the export?
Card-only and phone-only profiles often have no email. Integrators have also reported exports that stop short of the full list; compare the row count with the customer count in your dashboard.
Check your list before you send
Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
