How to Export Squarespace Subscribers and Contacts to an Email List

··4 min read

To get a clean email list out of Squarespace, export the mailing list and import only the subscribed file. In Squarespace, open Lists & Segments, click the ... menu next to the list and choose Export. The download is a .zip of three CSVs: subscribed, unsubscribed and cleaned. The subscribed file is your audience; the other two belong in your next tool's suppression list. Merge repeats and check the addresses before the import.

The free Squarespace contacts to email list tool merges and sorts the files in your browser. Here is each step.

Step 1: pick the right export

Squarespace has several exports, and they don't carry the same information. From its help on building mailing lists, the Contacts panel and managing customers (all read 2 November 2026):

Export Click path Consent shown by
Mailing list Lists & Segments > ... on the list > Export Which of the three files a contact is in
All contacts Contacts panel > ... at top right > Export all contacts > Confirm Not documented; check your file
Customers Lists & Segments > Customers > export icon > Confirm Nothing: no consent column in the documented fields

For a newsletter or a move to another email platform, the mailing list export is the one to use. The customer export is useful for order history and spend, but Squarespace's documented fields (name, email, total orders, total spent, dates, last used addresses, tags) include no consent column. The help also says "Notes and saved addresses aren't in the .csv export", and that the Form Submitters segment can't be exported at all.

Headers aren't documented for the contact and mailing list files. Check your own file before filtering.

Step 2: export the mailing list

  1. In Squarespace, open Marketing > Email Campaigns > Lists & Segments.
  2. Click the ... menu next to the list or segment.
  3. Choose Export and save the .zip.
  4. Unzip it. You get three CSV files: subscribed, unsubscribed and cleaned.

Step 3: put each file in the right place

File What it holds In the next tool
Subscribed People you can mail Import as subscribed
Unsubscribed People who opted out Import as unsubscribed or suppressed, never as audience
Cleaned Addresses that bounced on a past campaign Import as suppressed, or they bounce again on your new sender

The three files have the same columns, so once they're mixed you can't tell them apart. Keep them separate. If you have opt-outs from other tools too, combine them with the suppression list merger.

Step 4: when you have a contacts export instead

Squarespace's help says that if a contact's information "displays an Accepts Marketing label, it means you can contact that user via an email campaign." Customers who checked out without ticking the newsletter box don't have it. If your contacts file carries that as a column, keep the rows marked yes, set aside the no's, and treat blanks as no consent. The Squarespace tool reads it by name and tells you which column it used.

Consent rules depend on where your contacts are. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide covers US commercial email; UK, EU and Canadian rules expect an opt-in for most marketing.

Step 5: check the addresses

Squarespace cleans an address only after a campaign to it bounced. Subscribers who were never mailed, or haven't been mailed in a year, are unchecked: sign-up typos, throwaway addresses and inboxes that have since closed.

  1. Download the merged subscribed list.
  2. Upload it on the verify page. Every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
  3. Import the valid file into your new platform; add the invalid file to the suppression list with the cleaned file.

Risky means unconfirmed, not bad: catch-all business domains and Microsoft's consumer domains (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) often can't be confirmed either way. If this is a platform move, our post on verifying a list before switching ESP covers the import and first sends.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

Sorting and merging are free and run in your browser; nothing is uploaded. For the mailbox check, upload the list on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks; Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.

Common questions

How do I export my mailing list from Squarespace?

Open Lists & Segments in Email Campaigns, click the ... menu next to the list and choose Export. Squarespace downloads a .zip with three CSV files: subscribed, unsubscribed and cleaned.

What is the cleaned file in a Squarespace export?

Addresses Squarespace stopped mailing because they bounced. Don't import them as subscribers in your next tool; add them to its suppression list so they aren't mailed again.

Does the Squarespace customer export show who accepts marketing?

Not as a column. Squarespace's help lists the customer export fields (name, email, orders, spend, dates, addresses, tags) and none of them is consent. Use the Accepts Marketing label on profiles, or export a mailing list instead.

Can I export Form Submitters from Squarespace?

No. Squarespace's help says it's not possible to export contacts from the Form Submitters segment. Export form entries from where the form stores them, such as a connected Google Sheet.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
